Idol Gives Back: Preliminary Fashion Critique

The Dance Party of Manipultion

This weekend, I did not have time to post any new Idol information, although I did respond to some angry comments. The only TV that mattered this weekend was the season premier of Battlestar Galactica, the greatest show on television.

I have Tivo-ed those anciliary American Idol shows and should catch a little of those tonight (Don’t know if I can watch an entire episode…). While I was too busy concerning myself with who the final cylon is and developing my theory on why Gaius Baltar is going to end up being Jesus Christ, all that Idol Gives Back stuff got around to taping. Since I’ve never watched Idol Gives Back, I have no idea what to expect except celebrities talking about Africa, lots of commercials and the possibility of several group sings. One can only hope since the topic at hand is a bit sobering, choreography on group sings will be kept to a minimum.

Right now, there are only photos from Idol Gives Back. Rickey.org posted quite a few of them and I’ll try to be gentle on my critique of fashion choices. While I think Carly Smithson should have been wearing something a little less wintery, as it is April, I think that dress is Marc by Marc Jacobs (or at least “inspired by”). It’s a cute dress, just a bit out of season. Kristy Lee Cook is still dressing like an Army wife and I really have no idea what to say about Brooke White’s must-have-been-bought-at-Chico’s number. Seriously, she’s 24! I think that dress is actually a jumper, and it looks a lot like something I imagine being in Cloris Leachman’s closet, not a 24-year-old girl’s. Her hair looks quite lovely so its a shame she’s wearing something so terribly old.

Little disturbed by David Cook’s all-white suit. When I see a white guy who doesn’t normally wear suits in an all-white suit, it makes me think of those comedies about angels and heaven or something. I like that Jason Castro has kept it simple but give me a few to think about Michael Johns’ skinny tie & leather jacket combo.

Wait, upon further explanation after seeing the continued mention of there also being people from some So You Think You Can Dance show also participating, I was led to this photo of David Archuleta. That poor kid. Even though I don’t like watching or hearing him sing, I want to go rescue him from the clutches of that dancer wearing mesh. These photos indicate more terrible “dance numbers” and, help, dancers in terrible dancer costumes. Are terrible dancer costumes, forced choreography and Carrie Underwood wearing a Halle Berry hand-me-down really the way to bring awareness to poverty around the world?

Of course not! That’s why Brad Pitt and Bono show up.

For some reason, I have the nagging feeling I’m not really gonna be down with Idol Gives Back. Just a hunch, but I am already feeling a bit manipulated.

You are a real downer. Do you ever have anything good to say about anyone? When you are not happy with other people you need to do some soul searching.

I do most of my soul searching when I’m not at work or writing this blog. (And I did say nice things in the above post. I liked Carly’s dress, Jason Castro’s look and I spoke incredibly glowing words about “Battlestar Galactica.” ;)
