What ever happened to that End-Of-Tour Gift Card?

September 26, 2008

After the big brouhaha surrounding the “mysterious” Macbook and the End-of-Tour-Gift for Jason Castro in Tulsa, the thread containing any discussion of this was deleted from the fabulous fan forum all about peace, love, understanding and some other shit.

What’s so funny about peace, love and understanding? Lots.

All mention of the Visa Gift Card was taken off the board and not allowed to be spoken of again. The woman collecting funds for the gift card through her PayPal account also stopped posting for a few days, waiting for the brouhaha to die down. However, the same PayPal account popped up when money began being collected for the Christmas show.

Some people have wondered if the gift card was ever given to Stoner J. They donated money and wanted to know if the card was given to him. Because all mention of the incident on the board was removed, they had no idea where their money went.

Some people have sent me emails regarding this subject after they inquired as to the whereabouts of their contribution.

When people who had nothing to do with the gift inquired about the donations, they were told that all money had been refunded and the idea had been scrapped.

However, some fans requested information and were told the gift card WAS given. Here is a portion of an email received by some of those who inquired:

Yes, the gift was given to Jason in Tulsa, along with a nice letter that I’m attaching.  I saw him at the hotel when he was getting ready for the buses, so I only had a quick minute with him.  He was so surprised and appreciative of the gift.  In fact, his first reaction was “I can’t take this …” but when I explained that it came for a lot of people and the maximum suggested donation was $20, he understood.  I guess he originally thought it was just a few people, I didn’t explain it well.  But he was silent for a moment, he’s very introspective.  He seemed overwhelmed and in awe.  I’ve attached a picture of him with the letter and gift.  That’s all I got of him, it was very quick.  I did ask him not to mention it in a vlog or bulletin.  I told him about the controversy over date night (which he was surprised that people complained about it – he said he enjoyed it and it was a “blast”) and the assumption that I was the Sherry who gave him the computer.  So he understood why.  But he was sweet and gracious and appreciative.

They were also given a copy of the letter and a photo of Castro with the letter, although the word document is missing the last 2 lines of the letter shown in the photo which is obviously a signature of sorts. Unfortunately, the photo’s file size is too small to properly zoom in on these last 2 lines and read what they say.

It is curious as to why this was not included in the attached word document, as the letter writing was originally a group effort taken on by a few. And it was obviously a part of the final document’s text, so why wasn’t it part of the document sent to fans inquiring about their contribution to the gift? Wouldn’t it have been part of the last saved version, the one that was printed and given to him?

Here is the letter (No text has been altered and I have cut & paste everything that was in the document):

On February 19, 2008, Jason Castro was introduced to the world, and a journey began.  He was like no one we had ever seen on American Idol.  Throughout his time on the show, he was the first person to play an instrument, the first and only person to play the ukulele, and the only person to sing in three languages.  He also boosted the iTunes sales of other artists by singing their songs.  Some of us discovered him that day in February, when he sang “Daydream” for the first time; others took a little longer.  The important thing is, at some point in 2008, your fans began a journey with you, Jason, which changed our lives forever.  Now this journey is reaching another milestone:  the end of the American Idol 2008 tour and the beginning to your new career in music.  Along each step of this journey, you have changed so many lives with your music and your beautiful spirit.

You’ve changed the lives of many, all for the better.  For some, you help them overcome their fears of the dentist’s drill and the doctor’s needles with your soothing, relaxing voice.  For many, you have inspired them to dream big and go for it!  You remind them to never stop dreaming and never stop believing.  For others, you give them something to believe in again; something to look forward to.  You are helping them stand up on their feet again, after life knocked them down.  You are the answer to many of our prayers.  You are a reminder that we must enjoy the moment we are in.  We mustn’t take life and ourselves too seriously because we don’t control the outcomes.

You stand for individuality and originality.  You are the definition of undeniable and unique.  During this amazing journey, you are staying true to yourself, your faith, and your heart.  In a world where the tiniest bit of fame is used and abused by (young) Hollywood, you haven’t.  We are so proud to stand behind you in support.  You are a positive role model and our world needs more angels like you!

Like in “The Alchemist,” you have found your Personal Legend. Everything is clear and everything is possible. Never be afraid to dream.  God truly blessed us and we’re the special ones who have recognized your gift from the beginning. We started this journey together seven months ago and who would have thought it would bring us all together as a family? What brought us together was you, Jason. Each and every one of us sees something different and beautiful in you. Your talent unites us all. We have all witnessed life changing events and stories because of your gift of music.

Our end of tour gift to you isn’t just because WE LOVE JASON CASTRO! It is because we appreciate every single thing you’ve done for us (whether you realize it or not). Because of you, we wake up smiling every day. This gift is for you to spend however you choose. It’s to show our love and appreciation. It’s to say “Good Luck!”  We are ready for this adventure of your new upcoming and rising career. We will be behind you every step of the way. You need us (and we need you) now more than ever before.  As you’ve told us, we’re in this for life!

Here is the photo of Castro with the letter, but it does not appear he is holding the gift card(s). Perhaps it is in the envelope or his pocket? Maybe he did not want to pose grinning ear-to-ear with 2 Visa gift cards totaling over $1100, which is also perfectly acceptable. He could also be holding them behind the letter In any case, it shows that he received a letter, but no gift cards are visible in the photo.

Fans were also told they would receive a list of those who donated with the names blacked out to protect privacy. To my knowledge, their requests were ignored. If a list does exist, please send it to me and I will post it.

It’s been posted on some of the ridiculing sites that I never gave him the card – there were actually two because the maximum on a generic visa at my bank is $1000.  We collected over $1100.  H has all the records of what came in and a receipt for the gift cards, so you are welcome to copies of those as well.

Since the gift cards are no longer a permitted topic of discussion on the Castro fan boards, I hope this post can lead to more information on the subject. This is not an accusatory post. I am just responding to those who have emailed me asking to find out more information.

Our love depends on the receiver of the love. Let a thousand people pass before us, and we will not feel the same about each. Our love will be regulated by their appearance, by their personalities. Even when we find a few people we like, our feelings will fluctuate. How they treat us will affect how we love them. The receiver regulates our love. Not so with the love of God. The love of God is born from within him, not from what he finds in us. His love in uncaused and spontatneous. Does he love us because of our goodness? Because of our kindness? Because of our great faith? No, he loves us because of his goodness, kindness, and great faith.

I love all of you guys, with your comments that cause hurt to others. God commands us to love, like he loves us.
God bless you all and have a great day, go out and enjoy the sunshine that God has given us today.

If people need to hide what they are doing from the public eye…then maybe they should not be doing it at all!

Geezus…they don’t give a dam- about Jason Castro! They only care about themselves!

Dark Light, any sane and logical person can see between this blog site and Idletard’s that you are legit and not trying to stir a pot. I honestly feel bad for you, your daughter, your daughter’s friend, and her mother. At least this situation gives both of you the opportunity to talk to your daughter’s about issues such as this, that way they will be more cautious in the future. I think you’ve handled yourself very well and are a good role model for your daughter.

Top Idol, your logic falls on blind eyes. These Tards say the same thing about any blog or website that doesn’t preach rainbows and puppies about their Idol’s or the leaders of their cults. You’re the insane one, remember!

Lil Lulu, that is how I’ve felt about this situation since I started reading about it. In fact, that is how it is with most of the rabid fan bases, especially at the beginning. It’s fans seeing who can outdo someone else with posts, gift giving, shows attended, amount of merchandise/cd’s purchased, and etc…..With fan bases such as these, it’s almost NEVER about the music, no matter how much they like to claim it is.

I think the people trying to make it an old score issue are those that are keeping their lips sealed about what happened to the gift card (Sherry, RQ, and the Nazi Mods at his sites), those that want to know for sure if the gift card was given are just asking a legit question and deserve an answer. I don’t think they are settling old scores, as I don’t think they are that petty.

This is supposed about what happened to the end of tour gift. As Zelda says, there are old issues being addressed here and people are trying to settle old scores. Is is possible to drop that and focus? Dark.Light, you got your point across. You had the latest information on the gift card posted here. It came with repercussions. Life works that way sometimes. Would you please stop playing the victim in this CURRENT gift card situation? Instead of feeling sorry for youself, try to get some answers.

Yes, there are old issues being addressed here. THAT is because ddb threatened anyone who continued discussing this (except for the gifting people, of course!) with being banned.

This is what happens when you are over-controlling and abusive: people will simply find another outlet. Like here!

Tards R Us, you bring up some really good points. I guess being so far removed from it, it’s starting to look to me like it’s no longer really about the gift card at all. I get this feeling there are old scores being settled in here. I could be wrong, though.

I think this thread should be required reading for every new fanboard that goes up next season for the new crop of Idols. This is what happens when it’s really not about the music at all, but about people wanting power and real-life connection to these 15-minute-of-famers.

    Great point TopIdol!

I’m not a fan of his at all. But I think his die hard fans are not in touch with reality!

If it is all about the music as they keep saying. Then let it be that. Stop buying him tons of over the top gifts and making him stand out from all the other idol contestants.

The wacko fans are the ones who have caused this shitfest.
