I was thinking…another Castrofanlandia Scam!!!

October 3, 2008

In early May, a dedicated 22-year-old Castro fan used the “Dreadhead” logo (Designed by another fan who goes by “Blaker”) to make special spirit towels. The girl, named Aubrie, was a student at Texas A&M and didn’t really know him all that well, but she was a RA in his freshman year dorm. She was a fan and she wanted to support him.

Aubrie, aka “The Towel Girl”, even set up a website to sell the towels to Castro’s fans. She also stated the money would be donated to GLOW, a Texas A&M-based, student-run philanthropy organization mainly known for a 5K run. Castro often participated in the run as a member of the Aggie’s Men’s Club, a Christian men’s service organization who are involved with GLOW along with the Maggies, the comparable female club with similar goals and charitable endeavors.

During the AI season, one fan group, the Castrocopians, heard about GLOW after it was linked as Castro’s Favorite Charity on the now-defunct DaydreamingBoy.com fan forum and began donating to GLOW Ministries, an organization based in Zeeland, MI which does charity work in Haiti. (There is no website for the Texas A&M GLOW.) The head of GLOW Ministries, Philip Snyder, experienced a huge increase in online donations because of the mixup. The mixup was soon discovered but neither Castro nor GLOW (A&M) seemed to have a problem with it, with Castro saying he was glad this group got donations because of the mixup. Apparently, the Castrocopians still donate to GLOW Ministries and keep a thread devoted to this on their online forum.

End of story, right? A charity gets much-needed money to help Haitians in need due to a silly mix-up on an American Idol fan board. Serendipitous in a way, perhaps.

When all those Dreadheads turned out to see Castro return to his suburban Dallas home, Aggie Aubrie began selling towels with another fan’s design — which had pretty much become the “official logo” of the Dreadheads. The spirit towels were greeted with excitement and many fans quickly bought one or more of the $8 towels (which were shipped USPS). Aggie Aubrie even set up a website where fans could buy towels (using only PayPal as a payment method) and support the A&M philanthropic group. She stated on the website, and in a subsequent forum post, that part of the proceeds go to GLOW, Jason’s charity of choice. Aggie Aubrie also posted a (very) low-res logo for GLOW on her website, although it is not clickable. The information about GLOW from the student groups running the organization was posted verbatim on the Towels for Jason site:

GLOW is an organization that was started at Texas A&M University, which holds a 5K charity fun run. 100% of the money donated to GLOW goes to two organizations, New Horizon’s which gives a home to children who are taken from abusive homes, and a group in Honduras working to get kids off the streets and out of gangs.

The link to the Towels for Jason site was posted on both the Dreadheads and Castrocopia fansites, as well as the Idol Forums’ Jason Casto thread.

Castrocopians wrote three posts on their blog providing the link where you could buy the towels, also noting trusted family friend / PR guru Sooner had endorsed Towels for Jason on the Dreadheads fansite:

(Dated June 29th)
The AI Tour kicks off in zOMG!!! TWO MORE DAYS!!!

Jason’s fan club president Sooner has posted some tips for showing support for Jason at the venues at Daydreaming Boy, such as signs, spirit towels, etc., so head on over there for the lowdown on those.

The spirit towels mentioned in Sooner’s post can be purchased here and all proceeds go to charity, so it’s a win-win…

(How interesting. This fansite was under the impression that all proceeds from the towel sales would go to charity, perhaps because 100% of GLOW’s proceeds go towards their philanthropic endeavors.)

By the time the AI tour got underway, Castro fans were getting pissed. They placed orders for towels and had received nothing. They started PM-ing and emailing Aubrie, wondering why they had yet to receive their towels.

On July 15th, Aubrie posted this statement on the Dreadheads’ forum:

I am only going to post this once, so if anyone else asks please help me by relaying this message.

I am getting NEW towels out to those who have still not received theirs TODAY. They will be sent first class mail and should get to you by the end of the week

All of you who have PMed/e-mailed me I do not have time to reply to everyone individually today, so I hope you are all able to read this.

Now I am going to go get to cranking on these towels

By September, fans had still not received these towels. They began posting again, saying they had still not heard from her. Some had heard she was going through a bad time, didn’t have internet, blah blah blah.

So fans started getting vocal, they thought they had been had. They asked the moderators for help, but the moderators would not bite, as by this time, all talk about gifts or any sort of financial transactions were “banned” from the board.

On September 10th, one fan posted this:

Aubrie is going to the Tulsa concert on Saturday. If I see her there I’ll ask her for you.

She has posted that her internet isn’t stable and she has had a lot going on in her life that has slowed down the towel business.

The posts continued even after the Tulsa stop, the final tour date. Many had tried contacting her and demanded refunds. No response.

On September 17th, one fan posted:

It’s pretty clearly a rip off situation. I think DDB admin and mods need to get involved since this was advertised (and therefore endorsed) here.

The moderator responded:

Still haven’t tried any kool-aide hunh…too bad I’m bored and not playing……….

So I decided to do a little research.

I assumed Aubrie was a GLOW member or somehow affiliated, as she is definitely a student or former student at Texas A&M. And even if she was just a supporter in name only, and not a member, I expected to see some mention of her charitable efforts, and Jason Castro, on one of the websites featuring information.

No mention whatsoever. And remember, GLOW donates 100% of their proceeds to their charitable efforts, yet Towels For Jason site only said part of the proceeds would benefit their endeavors. The information on Towels For Jason was presented in such a way as if to say GLOW was aware of the efforts and / or the person running it had some sort of affiliation with the organization. If this girl was a student and had led fans to believe she was involved in their charitable efforts, why weren’t 100% of the sales going to the charity? Or at least an established percentage of the sales when she launched the website. Not very professional.

Perhaps the rest of the money was going towards making more towels if she perceived there would continue to be such a demand after both the TV show season and summer tour ended? But let’s put that thought on hold for a moment…

Why didn’t many of those who placed orders receive their towels? The website clearly states that orders would be received within 3 weeks when shipped in the U.S., and 4 weeks to Mexico and Canada. As of this evening, Towels For Jason STILL states the towels are in stock.

I estimate at least several hundred of these towels were sold, most likely netting Aubrie a minimum of $3000 – 5000. So what happened to the money?

Doing a bit of research about Aubrie, I discovered she had received a fair amount of minor media attention about four years ago. Of course, many other things I found on her, or written by her, express her devotion to God, Christianity, charity et al. However, when Aubrie was 18, she had no problem telling ABC News about her very special graduation gift. She gave an even more in-depth interview to Hilary Magazine:

“If I go to college, then no one’s going to know my boobs were small,” said the high school senior who endures teasing in suburban Dallas. “It would be a lot more evident if I did it in the middle of the school year.”

Her mother, grandmother, two aunts and stepmother have implants. Aubrie, who turns 18 in July, hopes to enhance her 32A cups to a small C. “If my mom is offering to pay for it now, why not?” she said.

I’m all for improving self esteem, but don’t give interviews to online magazines and ABC News / Good Morning America if you don’t want anyone to know about you getting breast implants a month after your 18th birthday. Happy graduation!

(And really, isn’t this Jesus guy supposed to love you despite all your imperfections? Isn’t that what you people always telling others he was crucified for or something like that? )

As I’ve said before, people can and will do whatever they want with their money. And I suppose a girl who isn’t even done growing yet can spend her money on breast implants. And sure, things in life can get us down and we might neglect certain responsibilities, as it seems Aubrie was going through a rough patch which prevented her from devoting time to her “towel business”.

Sorry. Not a viable excuse when you are operating a business and people have not been shipped items you promised they would receive in 3-4 weeks. You can’t just not answer emails inquiring as to where the items are or not refund people when they had the good faith to send you money.

Oh. And are part of the proceeds going to GLOW, Jason Castro’s charity of choice?

I emailed the Maggies’ representative and inquired about the Towels for Jason website, and to whether or not the girl was affiliated with GLOW.

I have no direct affiliation with towels for jason or really know anything about it. I would recommend contacting someone in charge of the website. I’ve heard of the website and was a fan of Jason Castro while he was on American Idol but thats about it.

Hmmm, you would think, with the popularity of American Idol and how far Jason Castro went in the competition, a student group from where he attended college would definitely post their affiliation with a website selling goods inspired by the singer if proceeds were, in fact, going to their group. Plus, wouldn’t the creator of the site want to notify GLOW? Perhaps they could help each other increase sales of the towels to even further fund their charity.

But their representative had only heard of the website and stated there was no direct affiliation between GLOW and Towels For Jason.

Ah, yet another tale of misappropriated funds in Castrofanlandia. And this time, the person behind it is dragging the name of a respected A&M student organization through the mud. Sure, this isn’t “big news” in the grand scheme of things (or even “celebrity gossip”) but why even potentially damage a charitable group’s reputation? Not only should the fans have received their towels, or at least a REFUND, they should have been told how much of the proceeds were donated to GLOW — at least a PERCENTAGE before the final amount was tallied.

But it seems that not only did most people not get their towels, their money never even got to the charity.

So, Castrofans, what did you pay for?

Blue towels or new tits?

Zelda is exactly right. Jason has no control over what his crazy fans do and he ends up taking the most crap over it. The sad thing is I believe he has plenty normal fans. He has almost 56,000 on myspace, but a few idiots are going to ruin him.

That is true, but the naive dreadheads were too trusting. The were feeding them excuses like Aubrie was in the process of moving and she did not have internet service.
By the time the tour was wrapping up, it dawned on them that they were scammed. Some contacted their credit cards and paypal. Over 60 days had passed, so it was too late.
I think if Aubrie had at least donated the proceeds to GLOW, it would have been easier to swallow.
Scams like this should be addressed.
It also proves once again that Sooner(who has zero experience in this business) should have no involvement with promoting Jason.

When this person is treated like a queen by the rah rah fans and the inner circle….they give Jason a black eye.

I have no respect for people who act like this: embracing the sociopaths among them, to protect a “fellow person unfairly portrayed”…Geezus, so pathetic what this insular mentality has done to those close to him and the few remaining fans that still post on sites oriented around him.

If you put your head in the sand as your first response to anything negative, even about the towel lady, you are just choosing to be blind.

    Who can respect this?

The Aggie’s Men’s and Maggies Women’s Clubs are partners in GLOW endeavors, the 5K run and other events.

I have no problem also emailing the Aggie Men’s Club, but GLOW is a joint effort by the two groups and I would imagine both groups would have been made aware if a particular charity drive was going on. Especially if it were to involving a former student who was a popular contestant on a #1 television show.

sadcastrofan, if even one person didn’t get what they paid for Towel Girl should be talking to them instead of avoiding them but to say that hundreds of people didn’t get their towels isn’t right. There would have been a riot if “hundreds” of people didn’t get their towels. IIRC, less than a dozen people said they didn’t get theirs.

Top Idol, Towel Girl posted on ddb that she was going through the Aggies Men Club for the charity. You should contact them since the Maggies didn’t have anything for you.

Hi zelda. Calm and reasonable as ever I see.

It is CRIMINAL behavior and it should not be tolerated. This woman (and yes, at 22 she is a legal adult) should refund every cent to those who PAID for towels and never received them. I suppose the money was used for her $350 ticket to Jason’s Christmas concert and her trip to Tulsa to see his last show. And Sooner and other “top fans” see nothing wrong with this?????????????? I’m with the person who says if Jason knows about this, I’m very disappointed in him. I truly hope he does not! I also hope that his mother is not supporting this woman and her ripping off other fans. I suspect that if Sooner asked her to refund the money, she might do it. But when noone is pressuring her to return it then why should she. Heck…she’s still being allowed to sit at front row tables at his concerts and treated with love and respect by his other “fans”. What about the hundreds of other fans and people she STOLE FROM? Don’t they deserve some love and respect, too? It’s a disgusting situation and reflects very badly on Sooner!

I agree with hoping for the best.

How can this woman (she is not a girl) go to Jason’s concert and not feel any guilt for the people who’s orders she did not fill? I agree that if she got in over her head, it was probably not her intention. If money was promised to a charity, then they should have received it. That is deception to the customer at its worst. When she realized her predicament, she should have stopped the whole thing, returned the money to the people who’s orders were not filled, and made a public statement about the whole mess. It is better to be honest and upfront than to hide or pretend nothing has happened. If she has $350 for a seat at his concert, a dinner, and happy hour, that is money that could have been refunded to her customers. She dug herself a deeper hole when she bought that ticket, and has no right going until all monies have been refunded or forwarded to the GLOW charity.

I’m one of the 10 people on here and I’m a Jason fan and yes, this does concern me. If this girl got in over her head she should have just said that and refunded the money. Instead, she chose to keep it. That is flat out wrong. It is also wrong to imply that part of the proceeds will go to charity when the charity itself has no idea that you are even using their name. The charity should have the right to decide if they want to be associated with a venture or not. By putting GLOW on the site she implied that they endorsed this and they did not.

Aside from that what I find most troubling is that Jason’s fan base seems to condone this kind of activity. This girl is going to be welcomed by the Dreadheads going to the concert including Sooner after ripping off Jason’s fans. That baffles me. Yes, scams go on in every fan base but this is the first fan base I’ve seen that embraces a scam artist.

I would be totally crushed if Jason condoned this kind of scam against his own fans. That would be the last straw. I’m not going to blame him for people like justafan and other fans who approve of this stuff but if I found out that he knew about it and thought it was OK I probably couldn’t be a fan of his anymore.

Anyhoo, it’s okay that she couldn’t keep up with the demand or that her life got complicated and she didn’t want to sell towels anymore. What’s not okay is that she kept people’s money. And the fact that she lied about giving proceeds to charity is the topper.

At the end Betsy holds up the towel and shows it but Jason immediately stops her. People wondered why so Betsy posted that he had cut himself and wiped it off on the towel and didn’t want people to see that. I don’t know if this counts as Betsy endorsing the towel. She probably just thought it was cute. Sooner did encourage people to buy the towels though.

For people who say this woman got in over her head that could be the case but if so, why didn’t she just say so and give the money back? You need to explain why you think she is entitled to keep the money when she didn’t deliver the goods.

Castronaughty is NOT lying. DDB has been erased but there were many posts about the video blog in question, and Mrs. Castro was responding to the many who asked if that was the spirit towel in the video. She acknowledged it was, and she was going to show it but Jason stopped her because it had blood on it.

    Castrocopia post from June 29th:

“Jason’s fan club president, Sooner, has posted some tips for showing support for Jason at the venues at Daydreaming Boy, such as signs, spirit towels, etc., so head on over there for the lowdown on those.

The spirit towels mentioned in Sooner’s post can be purchased here and all proceeds go to charity, so it’s win-win.”

Sooner is the fan club president. She endorsed the towels. Sooner is also a friend of the Castro family who has claimed to speak for the family since February. So indeed the Castro family was at least peripherally involved in encouraging the fans to buy the towels.

Here’s Betsy’s quote about how she tried to show off the spirit towel on the video blog:

“He wipped some blood from a scab w it and was embarrased to show it dirty! I’m on my blackberry at a hospital in FL with my 78 year old dad so bear with me!(And pray for him! Never a dull moment!) Replying on the forums is a bit challenging!
Regarding Jason (as well as Michael)and his role as big bro to Jackie, it started from the moment I told them we were having a baby girl! I made sure they both understood the huge redponsibility they had been given, and I must say they have been awesome bros! They tease every once in a while, but overall, she knows what a Godly man looks like and the man that wins her heart over has some big shoes to fill! They go above and beyond helping her become the best she can be! ”

Castronaughty, find the video where Jason shows the towel. It does not exist. You chose to spin here. There is one video, which he doesn’t allow something to be shown and fans speculated that it was the towel, but we do not know that for sure.
I don’t think the Castros are in any position of banning people who buy a ticket from the concert. What do you expect Jason to do? I don’t think she is his best friend.
Did you purchase a towel? If you did, I suppose you could take her to court and get your $8 back. Will that make you feel better?

Zelda, you always talk about Jason’s inner circle, yet I don’t think you have any idea who is in his inner circle. You don’t want his family in his inner circle, but guess what that is his choice. You strike me as an extremely jealous and very obsessive fans. I think you either have to accept that Jason has people close to him that he counts on or choose not to be his fan. It is just silly that you keep saying the same thing over and over. I see you as the dysfunctional person. Jumping from site to site trying to find someone who will listen. Finally you have found some people(five disgruntled fans and five people that like to make fun of fans) willing to listen to your obsessive hate of Mrs. Castro and a few fans you can’t get along with.

The problem is that the entire inner circle, as well as the over the top fans, have a bunker mentality going. They are defensive about everything and it becomes a self-fullfilling prophecy. The bunker has gotten so insulated that it has no critical thinking apparatus. It is just ignore ignore ignore…..and they then create the very problems that they are trying to distance themselves from.

Basically, this type of mentality does not learn from its mistakes…because it cannot admit to any.

This is so very very dysfuntional…it is appalling.

Some people received the towels. Many did not. It’s true that Sooner and Betsy both endorsed the towels. Betsy even had Jason show one of them off in one of his videos. Everyone who did not receive a towel was ripped off. Taken for $8 bucks or more. Yet, Aubrie is still attending Jason’s concerts with all the “dreadheads” and is an accepted member of their “group” in spite of the fact she blatantly ripped people off and accepted money for towels she never sent. If she didn’t have enough towels, she should have returned the money. Simple as that. She is basically a THIEF and should be prosecuted criminally for what she did! But instead, she will be front and center at one of the $3,500 tables (paying $350 a ticket) at Jason’s Christmas Concert with no reprecussions whatsoever!!! Does JASON know about any of this? If he does, he should distance himself from people like Aubrie and Sherry immediately. He doesn’t need scammers and criminals as fans taking advantage of his honest and sincere fans and allowing these women to still be close to him and in the “inner circle” when they’re ripping people off will end up destroying any credibility he has with legitimate fans.

    Justafan,

I’m aware that DDB no longer exists. It spontaneously combusted, or Kali would have us believe.

When DDB was still around, people were asking for months where their towels went. The last comments were as recent as a couple of weeks ago. Top Idol has uncovered that the towels weren’t for charity after all. The towel girl is going to be in Garland. Maybe it’s a good opportunity for those attending the concert to ask for their money back.

While I get what you’re saying about being careful with Internet purchases, when a web site (DDB and Castrocopia) endorsed the product, they play some role in trying to make things right. Sooner endorsed the towels. Betsy tried to show one of the towels off in a video blog. But now there can’t be any discussion about a product Jason’s camp was pushing fans to purchase this summer?

I’m hoping Aubrie will catch wind of this blog post and do the right thing by refunding people’s money and admitting to everyone that she pocketed all the money instead of giving it to charity.

  49. TopIdol permalink
    October 4, 2008 9:37 pm

People did try to get a refund and contacted PayPal, but they said there was nothing they could do after 2 months.

I think the main crux of this is that people bought something with the expectation the money they were spending would be going to charity. There is no evidence of that, especially since the charity the towels were supposedly benefiting were not affiliated with her website, and had only just “heard of it”. On other fansites, it was posted that all proceeds from the towel sales were going to charity.

Not only did people not get what they ordered, there is also no proof the money went to charity.

Isn’t there something wrong with that?

    Rachel,
DDB no longer exists, how can they allow people to post their concerns about Aubrie. I guess if people are going to buy things via the internet they take the risk that they might not get the product. Yes it is a shame that things turned out the way they did. I guess if you ordered a towel you might try to get the $10 back you spent, but I don’t think it is going to break you if you don’t.

As I said earlier, whether this story is considered major or minor isn’t what’s at the crux of this. I think that this is just another issue that DDB tried to cover up or squash. If they were endorsing these towels, I think they should allow those that lost money to be able to find out what happened. Telling them to shut up is just going to make the situation worse….and that’s why we’re talking about this here.

Sure, $10 isn’t much to be out for most people, but its still annoying when you don’t get what you paid for.

Plus, there were people who ordered several towels, so I’m sure some orders ranged from $30-100. I think she was able to get a fair amount of orders because she created the website, therefore “legitimizing” it in some way, adding the information regarding the charity (although a paragraph and non-clickable logo isn’t exactly the most believable way of going about legitimacy…)

If she couldn’t have gotten a reorder made or if things were so tough in her life, she should have refunded the money and apologized. Not just left a final note and disappeared.

And frankly, if she was involving a charity’s name and using this name to sell these towels, they should have been made aware of it as soon as she started the operation.

First point, this mess shouldn’t reflect on Jason at all. Second point, this does have the appearance of an outright scam.

I don’t care if you personally don’t have internet service, you can go to a friend, an internet cafe or something along those lines. It’s not believable that this woman couldn’t find some way to communicate with people. And she knew there was a problem. She surfaced briefly only to once again become incommunicado with the entire civilized world.

The content of her message comes off as completely disdainful of anyone who dared to complain about not getting their towel. “I’m only going to post this once…” sounds like she is dealing with a child who has misbehaved, not people who have paid her money for a product she has failed to deliver.

I had no idea she claimed to be giving part of the proceeds to GLOW and they were totally unaware of this. That is very unfair to them. They should have been informed the name of their organization was being used in association with this.

Before DDB went kaput I read that Towel Woman was planning on attending the Christmas concert. If so, I wonder if anyone will confront her about this. On the one hand, it’s only about $10 and you’d have to face being shouted down by fans like Fiemo for being obstreperous and daring to bring up the matter at all. Anyone who inquires about their towel will immediately be tagged as a “hater”, which has become the favorite slur used against anyone who dares to question anything.

Then again, no one likes to be ripped off even if it is only $10. The bottom line is that you should never send money to a stranger over the internet even if it seems like a great idea and a good cause. This isn’t the first scam to occur in an Idol fan base and it won’t be the last. Caveat emptor.

Once again…anything “negative” cannot be acknowledged. When are people going to learn that trying to hide things is the worst thing you can do in celebrity land? Address things head on and then YOU control the story!

Uh…no one ever said Sherry had anything to do with the towels.

Oh, and it’s really hard to make money off a blog with NO ADVERTISING. But if you know someone who will pay me for writing this crap, please put me in touch with them.

What are you saying now? That it wasn’t Sherry? I read on here that Sherry was responsible for this shitfest too. Did she buy you off? You fucking retards. Sell someone else out so you can put a buck in your pocket.
