Look who is trying out! Michael Castro! He’s the younger brother of Stoner J ! I’ve heard a lot of people say Michael has a better voice than his older brother, yet I had also always heard he was too shy to try out. It looks like his family must have roped him into their new family business, hoping to capitalize on his brother’s existing fanbase, as well as kicking the Michael Castro fan forum threads into major action.
He’s a college freshman, but what good is college when there’s American Idol? Looks like the middle Castro child is getting pushed into the family business. I mean, come on! Who needs higher education when you have merchandising opportunities and the potential for even more fan handouts? Exactly!
If his brother was with him and they were sitting in that nice little waiting room before going in to meet with the judges, you already know Michael most likely made it to Hollywood. And there’s already a built-in back story! There’s never been an instance where two siblings made the Top 24, let alone in two different seasons. This could finally put the Crazy Castro Fans into a category of their own, completely blowing away all that Claymate lunacy.
Does this mean Michael Castro is going to be the family’s Michael Corleone? Poor guy.

BTW Spoon, ITA agree with you regarding Jason wasting his college scholarship. I had a full ride as well, and I worked hard to maintain it…to piss it all away would have been an insult to my parents, to my college, and to all the other deserving students who could have reaped the benefits. I went onto graduate school, which I paid myself. I’m convinced that Jason doesn’t give a crap about finishing college OR his music career. He seems to just want to hang out and coast on his looks. No SPOON I don’t see why you are so angry and bitter. I think you can be proud of what you accomplished, but I see no reason why you focus on others when nothing can be gained by it. Being angry at something you have no control over is a no win situation. Focus on your accomplishments and be happy.
Of course I don’t view this as negative. I see people working at accomplishing their goals. College isn’t everything. Why should a person waste their time in college if they realize it isn’t what they expected, scholarship or not.

I actually think Jason left college for himself, since he realized that he would love to do something in music and that something just happened to come his way.
The scholarships I worked my ass off for only paid for one semester and did not cover books or upkeep. I worked two different part time jobs so that I could complete my education all the way through graduate school. I never applied for student loans.
Why would anyone excuse an asshole like Jason Cashtro for squandering a full-pop scholarship? What about the kids that were also considered for those funds? Look into how Scholarships work. Maybe then you will see why I am so disgusted by this family of “Travelers.”

Homeless to Harvard was actually a DECENT Lifetime movie, won a couple of Emmys and starred Thora Birch and Robin Wright Penn. It’s a really compelling story, and then at the end, you find out she spent only 2 years at Harvard (also on scholarship) and at least for me, it was a total and complete letdown.
TopIdol, I’ve never heard of that movie, but it sounds like it may not be worth watching.
I think some people may be afraid to get the degree, because they might actually have to do something with it.

Yeah, computer geniuses / sick graphic designers seem to be able to go about doing that sort of thing much easier than everyone else.
I wasted my undergrad (and a good deal of my parents’ money). I went back and got an M.A. years later and had a wonderful time, and I also put more effort into it. But I try not to dwell on the fact I should have worked harder when I was younger. It does stick with you, even when you try to not regret…Things like not working harder, even if I can chalk it all up as a “learning experience”.
I’ve just never understood why people who are so close to finishing drop out, especially if they are on a full-ride. Most likely won’t be there if/when they decide to go back, and yes, could have taken the spot of someone who really wanted it.
Do you remember that Lifetime movie Homeless to Harvard? The prologue to that film ruined the whole thing. The girl whom the story was based dropped out of Harvard and moved to L.A. Think she may have taken a couple of classes at UCLA or something occasionally after leaving Harvard. Ok. This girl got into Harvard. They made a movie about it. Should have gone and graduated 😉

SPOON, that is terrific that you worked your ass off in college to get a scholarship. I was fortunate my parents paid for my college, it still doesn’t mean I got the most out of my college education. For some people if you have a dream or a goal you should reach for it and it may not mean college is always the right choice.

Top Idol, college was too much fun. If I had waited a few years I would have learned even more in college. I always look back to the students in my class that were older and they always seemed to get so much more out of the class. I guess if you work for a few years you might be more focused on your goals.
Yes, you can go back and get an advanced degree, but Jason can also go back and just get a degree if things don’t work out. I think he realized engineering might not be his true goal in life. I’ve heard him say many times that he loves music and anything to do with music. It seems logical that he would pursue that dream. He must have had a passion for music to teach himself how to sing and play the guitar.
I hope Jason does pursue music because I think he’s good at it and he has the rare ability to connect with his audience when he sings. I hope he can develop the discipline he needs and I hope he gets the professional guidance he deserves.
I was an idiot when I was 21, but I also learned in a lot of cases, if doesn’t matter what your degree is in. You can always go back for an advanced degree or something different. Point is, if you’re on scholarship and don’t have much longer to go, why not just finish? Gets harder to go back once you get older. And college is kind of fun, ya know?
But this is starting to make even more sense now, the kid wasn’t even a “singer”. He was a drummer. Maybe his mom wants him to be Phil Collins but with a lot more hair? In any case, it does make sense why he wasn’t a “singer” in the sense of the other contestants.

Top Idol, maybe he felt like he couldn’t focus on college at this time. I went right after high school, but there are many times I wish I had waited and really tried to figure out what I wanted to do. My degree was in finance and a minor in French, but now I think I would have enjoyed early childhood education. Sometimes at the age of 21 it is really hard to know what really interests you.
I think Jason has chosen to follow his heart and that seems to be a career in music. Who knows if he will succeed, but it is worth a try.
I heard it directly out of his mouth in one of the interviews he did. I believe it was one of the interviews when he first made the Top 24. There were a number of interviews all done the same day and posted on YouTube and it in was one of them. I actually thought “Ought Oh” when I heard it because I found it before he was eliminated and when Sooner & Company were trying to get support at Texas A & M and he kinda dissed college saying a large part of the reason he tried out was because he didn’t want to go back to college. I’ll try to find the link and post it here. Very enlightening.

I don’t think Jason was ever all that serious about being on Idol and I don’t know how serious he really is about having a career post-Idol. It is beginning to seem more like something his “family” is pushing than what he really wants for himself. I remember him saying something on tour to the effect that if his life went back to the way it was before he wouldn’t care and that it might actually be nice. I totally agree what he really seems to want is to hang out with his girlfriend and friends and sorta goof off and I don’t know that a CD will ever happen. I don’t think he’s that driven. He’s also said that his parents told him he either had to pursue the music career seriously or go back to college and he didn’t want to go back to college so he tried out for Idol. I think his parents are the ones who are pushing the career. They see the $$$ that can be made and they aren’t about to let him back out now. I hope they’re not pushing Michael the same way although I suspect he saw the goodies Jason got this summer and has decided to try to grab some of it for himself. I also don’t think he or Jackie has the “It” factor that Jason has (and I do believe Jason has “it” but I’m still not sure he really wants “it” either). Time will tell.

I’m a fan of Jason but he needs to move on from AI and I really hope he is. I want him to have a professional career, assuming that’s what he wants. If he doesn’t then that’s fine too. Go back to school. I’m sure his brother is nice but I’m interested in Jason not Michael. I’m not interested in Jackie either. Or Betsy. I don’t know if Michael or Jackie can sing but Simon pointed out early on that Jason has the “it” factor and I don’t think either Michael or Jackie has it. Just my opinion.
I’m surprised because on AI Extra after Jason was voted off Michael said he would NEVER try out. He was adamant. What changed his mind? I hope it wasn’t Betsy. If it was, she is starting to make Jeff Archuletta look good by way of comparison.
One other thing came out on AI Extra. Betsy basically admitted that the family pushed Jason into trying out. They told him he was going to do it and although I’m sure part of him wanted to also I’m starting to wonder. I don’t think he knows what he wants beyond being with his girlfriend and hanging out with his friends. I think he loves music and is good at it but I’m not sure he has the work ethic that someone like David Cook has had all these years. Who knows. The only thing I can be sure of is that Betsy Castro knows exactly what she wants. Whether what she wants is good for her kids remains to be seen.
Does anyone know if Andrew Cook is trying out this year? I know Fantasia’s brother tried out and did not make it past the early rounds.

Okay now Stoner s, I wish to ask you a favor. Please separate your posts into paragraphs. I’m not meaning to be insulting, nor am I using this as a debate tactic. It’s just that I work long hours and huge blocks of type give me a headache. TIA
You know, a lot of Jason’s fans don’t expect him to necessarily become some sort of major supahstah. They want him to be as successful as would make him happy. “Working musician,” playing gigs, making a living doing his thing – if that’s what he wants…great. A lot of awesome music has been put out into the world by people you never hear on the radio – any radio – ever. As long as he puts out an album so I can get him on my ipod, I’m good. If not, I’m sad, but I will get by. Promise, cuz I know you were worried.
I’m just making this point because this site and others like it do a lot of pointing and laughing at delusional fans devoting themselves to fleeting starlets who are never really going to make it. In reality, it may be you all who miss the point – what exactly do you mean by “making it?” For some of us, it actually is about the music.
It’s for that reason that I have chosen not to stress over the level of involvement of Jason’s family – which yes, makes me uncomfortable, or some of the actions of his mother – who yes, often strikes me as both terribly tacky and not very bright. I have no control over how Jason chooses to run his career – wish I did, cuz I have some advice for the kid, but I don’t. And I’m pretty sure he’ll put out some music, somehow. If he doesn’t have the kind of career some of his fans want from him…so be it. Maybe he didn’t want it to begin with. Maybe he could never have had it. Maybe he did want it, could have had it, and lost it for himself. As a fan, you might be disappointed, but your expectations have nothing to do with his obligations. If you voted (I didn’t), it was because you liked him. He was already doing something for you. He fulfilled all he was obligated to in the contract between fan and artist. He puts it out there, and if you want it, you buy it. Anything you did for him was of your own volition, and if he didn’t bring the returns you hoped for…why is that his fault?
I could write a lot more, like about how I only buy into maybe a third of the trash that people write about the Castros (and why, precisely and in detail, I don’t buy into those other two thirds), but it doesn’t really matter, does it? Besides, although IMO Top Idol does keep to a fairly high standard of facts and presentation, a good number of the posters here could easily fail to read intelligently before dismissing me with cries of “Fantard!” and/or “Do you even have a mind, or do you just use your head for storing NUTS, you complete and utter ignoramus???”
I almost named names and offered some constructive criticism, but I decided that I was, in fact, mainly trying to be mean, and constructiveness would have been an unintended side effect. Still, if you think that you might be a hypocritical, borderline-paranoid conspiracy theorist who often displays a certain childishness and/or bitterness…I don’t know, maybe try proofreading?

During the tour KLC promised prizes t-shirts, autographed pictures etc. to the person who brought her the best gift or sign. It is all over the internet. Does that not qualify as grifting. My main point was that people are acting like Jason kicked there puppy. Read some of KLC fan forums from during the tour time. She was definitely rewarding the best gift and sign. I also brought up MJ because everyone said it was ok that his fans bought him a laptop and a videocamera, I guess it was a surprise they actually did it after he made it very obvious he wanted one. He also promised V-Blog when he got it anyone seen a V-Blog yet. I have not contributed a dime for a gift to JC or even went to the tour. Really didn’t even vote either. Actually if it were’nt for the writer strike I would’ve watched CSI. But just alot of thing are being told as if they we’re the truth. One other incident, It’s being reported that Castrocopia gave Jason a kindle, they talked about it for about 2 pages, decided the money would be better spent donating to the charity Glow that got mixed up before. The charity serves and cares for children In Haiti. Hurricane Ike destroyed the bridge that was used to get these children food and clothes. I personally think VFTW is a very funny site, but I do think that sometimes if there is news on a contestant or a fanbase that could put them in a good light it doesn’t fit they’re agenda. I have laughed my ass off at the stoner jokes and how thick headed stoner J is. I personally believe someone can be very book smart and still not have a clue. VFTW is a funny site. Lots of AI fans lurk and laugh, but sometimes I think maybe they go just a tad overboard.

I had to chuckle at his ethnicity being brought up. I think that’s a bunch of bull-crap. The kids don’t even speak Spanish. They have been raised to embrace good ‘ole American values, like Betsy’s admiration of cheerleading and Jackie’s love of Juicy Couture. They ran out and bought it and he still hasn’t V-blogged. Fans have given a lot to help jason have a career. They have talked about him endlessly, they have played his myspace songs endlessly, they have voted for him endlessly, they bought tickets to AI concerts. Fans have invested in his career. Therefore, it should be no surprise that fans get upset when they believe this is simply being thrown away because of a lack of attention to PR problems.
People can live their lives as they wish. But, this particular person, Jason Castro, made us believe that he wanted a SUCCESSFUL music career. We did our part….and it appears that things are falling apart for no good reason!
So you can go on and on about the right people have to live their own lives. But, we are talking about a particular person who supposedly WANTS a music career. Of course we will speak up. We are entitled to speak up when we see that what he supposedly was working for and what his fans helped promote was a bonafide music career. We have every right to yell to high heavens about this. It feels like a betrayal to many.
And as you are someone who really doesn’t care one way or the other, who are you to tell us all about your “live and let live” philosophy as you sit removed up in your “judgmental little ivory tower?
