Lunchtime Poll #1

October 18, 2008

AI Season 1 third-place finisher Nikki McKibbin has been speaking out about her battles with addiction just in time for her appearance on the second season of VH1’s Celebrity Rehab.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard Nikki McKibbin sing, but I wish her the best of luck with her future and her career. She says that Simon Cowell’s brutal comments are not to blame, but they didn’t exactly help since it was the first time she had heard actual criticism.

“For me, I had never been told I wasn’t good,” she said. “I’m by no means blaming him. I’m an addict, and if you tell an addict they’re no good, it triggers you and makes you think you’re worthless and useless and no good at the only thing you ever wanted to do your whole life.”

Some people may cry foul about such a statement, or the fact that she is openly discussing it, but her statements lend credence into how overnight success of sorts can kind of screw a person up. The show doesn’t exactly provide a happy ending to all that sing on its stages for a number or reasons…Is she just trying to get some free press? Maybe, maybe not. She seems like someone who is sincerely trying to get her act together.

And I did find this (unrelated) remark of hers interesting:

McKibbin released her debut album, Unleashed, on an indie label in 2007, after being dropped by RCA Records and 19 Management for spurning their suggestions to make a country album following her “Idol” run.

Silly 19E, always pushing that “country” career on comely Southern girls who aren’t favored to win the show.

McKibbin is the second Idol contestant to appear on Dr. Drew Pinksky’s Celebrity Rehab. The first season featured Season 4’s Jessica Sierra, who is now undergoing intensive year-long treatment after an incident with police following her initial treatment in the facility.

Since hearing she would be appearing on the show, I started to wonder…Is the Idol contestant a must-have for the series? And if so, who do you think is going to be the next Idol to enter treatment with Dr. Drew? Some have had run-ins with the law and others just…well, hey, life is stressful. Especially after Idol.

While I must admit the poll is a bit snarky, addiction is not a joke. Here’s hoping both McKibbin and Sierra have bright futures ahead of them.

And if you haven’t watched the show, check it out. It can actually be quite an eye opener, especially the scenes with Jeff Conaway and his ultimate-enabler / user girlfriend Vicki. He’s back again this season…which is a good thing, considering the last thing I read about him was that he was embracing Scientology after a visit from Danny Zucko.

I keep voting for Constantine, just to encourage his inevitable crash.

Paula Abdul really needs to go on Celebrity Rehab but I highly doubt that would ever happen.
