Bucky Covington: Real Cool Guy
During Tuesday’s Idol stupidity, Simon made some lame crack about Bucky Covington. I typically love Simon, however, that was kind of lame, considering Bucky is a cool dude who has done pretty well since appearing on Idol back in 2006. (Plus, my friend Magnum met him in Vegas right after he was booted from the show and had nothing but good things to say about the guy.)
Anyway, I felt the need to spread a little love to Bucky Covington. Because Bucky has just always struck me as a very cool, very down-to-earth kind of guy and I’m happy he’s done well since appearing on American Idol.
Bucky is currently entertaining the troops in Europe while touring with the USO. (David Cook also recently did a few USO shows in Iraq and Afghanistan, too.)
Bucky’s been blogging a bit about his journey on his MySpace.
February 19 & 20
The days are running together but to catch you up on the trip…
We got to shoot guns with a situation simulator which was very cool, then we visited the bomb squad and learned of all of the explosive devices they have found in the area – some dating back to WW1. They find one every other day. Steve and I put on a Bomb suit and looked like sumo wrestlers from outerspace and carried a mortor shell 100′ and back. The suit outweighed me by 50 lbs! We were checked In to leave Kosovo and the snow started comming down heavy…our flight was cancelled and we had to get a new plan quick or we would have to cancel the show in the Netherlands ….so we drove back to camp bondsteel to pick up orders to cross the border into Macedonia. The border crossing was in a snowstorm after midnight on a 2 lane road in the mountains, looked like a scene from a Stephen King movie. We made it across and jumped on a plane in Skopje flew 2 hrs to Zagreb, Croatia landed late because of extensive deicing …they held our next plane so we could board then onto Zagreb, Croatia….then we drove 3 hrs to Amsterdam, line checked and pulled the show off. We’re having a great time over here meeting everyone and participating in as much as we can. Everyone has been so great to us.
(I hope Bucky was able to spend some time in the airport in Zagreb. It is seriously one of my favorite airports EVER, and not just because they have ashtrays next to the baggage claim.)
Here are some photos Bucky posted on his MySpace. Here he is performing for the troops and their families in the Netherlands:
