For Your Amusement I mean ENTERTAINMENT: Adam Lambert’s Album Cover (I swear it’s for real)

October 27, 2009

I don’t care if 1000 Glamberts come over here and call me a homophobe.

This shit is the gayest damn thing I’ve seen since Wham’s Wake Me Up (Before You Go Go) video. When I first saw it, I literally thought it was a joke. And then I kept tilting my head to look at it. And then Gary Wright’s Dreamweaver started playing in my mind and things began to spin. Adam Lambert’s head…spinning into the cosmos.

Oh honey, this is just not a good look for you. Or a good debut album cover. I get the retro “glam” throwback, but it doesn’t come off as a retooled version of glam, it just comes off as uh, kind of cheap?

For your amusement, I present Adam Lambert’s For Your Entertainment

Adam Lambert For Your Entertainment Album Cover

Thoughts?

(Oh yeah. It’s real. Right down to the Flashdance font.)

i think the cover is a man finally expressing his sexuality globally. A man being able to be himself. Good for him. I think the cover is fitting for the music and his personality. I love it. I guess you just have to get the lifestyle? I don’t know.

My reaction was prior to hearing the music. I have come to like the artwork. It was shocking at first, but that is part of Adam’s appeal. I still don’t like the typography choices, but the cd booklet and deluxe packaging are beautifully executed. The photos are magnificent. I love the music. I get the lifestyle. I am a fan. 🙂

Besides, I have been very busy trolling Gossip Candy. She is away on a business trip and the inmates are running the asylum. With all the in-fighting and inappropriate posts, I have been thoroughly entertained.

And yes, it is crazy over there. I did discover a site dictionary/glossary so I could follow along. I never knew what all their secret codes where before, now I do. They are really into Adam and Tommy (dude he kissed) “shipping.” There are also Gokey lovers who have been posting Gokey love crap that include panties with his name on them. (BIG panties) Most of the posts are fantasy based. HH/Adam’s fashion has been a hot topic, one I enjoy. His new stylist is really pulling some great looks together for him. I love the shirts with the thumb holes, his Dior jeans and the onyx ring.

Candy does a better job obviously, her posts are more news worthy and updated many times throughout the day. I usually just scan the headlines and never read the comments.

LOL I’ve heard this said before … I must have been blind to it. Actually blinded by my Gokey disdain and the judges’ scorn toward Allison and Kris.

Can you give me an example or is it all purely speculation?

I don’t listen to Ryan’s radio show too often, but he’s always trying to be one of the guys, talking about women and a lewd manner and letting “us” know women have stayed over at his place … with his mom. J/K J/K

“For you to see Adam through my eyes you need to google a photo of him in High School or Jr. High. In it, he has dark red hair and is wearing a polyester suit with a bow tie. His teeth are yellow and in braces. He is fat. That is Adam Lambert. Everything else is smoke and mirrors. And, unlike the “mega hottie,” Adam struggles with his self image everyday.” — 8sourcandy

I’ve said this before myself. It is all smoke and mirrors and beyond the charade, deep inside, Adam still carries that boy from high school around with him everyday. We all do in some form or another, no matter life’s metamorphosis. Adam called Kris well-adjusted. High praise for someone I believe who struggles with self-acceptance every day. A very human struggle no matter your sexual orientation.

Right now Adam is playing the role of his life — rockstar. What will he be next?

I think most people agree Adam is a gifted singer, but individual taste vary. What is enjoyable for one may not be for another.

@8SourCandy (possibly GossipCandy?): Most of the conservatives I know who watch Idol are actually pro-gay. (They are friends with me, after all, even if I am more of a butch twinkie–interpret that as you wish ^_^.) But the fact of the matter is their disdain for Adam does not even remotely correlate with his homosexuality. It’s his screechy voice and obnoxious stage presence, with the tongue wagging out and shit.

I was a Kradamite before–just ’cause I do find it cute when a religious straight guy eschews absolutely all stereotypes about him and is just completely unique and open-minded in that Kris Allen way, which to me is sorta speaking volumes about the progress individual Americans have made in the way of tolerance and loving one another. So Adam grew on me, particularly after his incredible “Ring of Fire” performance, while I always rooted for Kris because I wanted to see him get the credit he deserved since his blink-and-you’ll-miss-it audition. (Also, yes, he is a mega hottie. And I urged all the bitter people pissed off about Ricky not making it over Sarver in the semis to vote for Kris so we can have SOME eye candy in the Top 12/13, regardless. And I’m glad that said eye candy proved to be more than meets the eye.)

But many still didn’t warm up to his vocals. Some of you forget that just because he has powerful VOLUME, doesn’t mean he’s the most nuanced of singers. And it’s people in that mindset that can’t give Kris credit, for despite his more subdued vocals, he has connection with his music and knows how to rework songs. Look at his Wiki page–he co-wrote a hearty majority of his tracks!

My point is this: Kris has continued to be an endearing presence, always appreciative of his fans, having a self-deprecating sense of humor about things (a real asset in society in regards to connecting to others), never trying too hard without comprising one’s self, and I think he’ll benefit from that. Meanwhile, Adam’s cockiness and insistence to “push the envelope” (see: going overboard to be shocking for the sake of caricature, rather than being a real person) is the unpleasantness here. (Not to mention his attitude.) That’s what turns off many of the conservatives. Not his gayness. Despite that his CD looks like it can only be purchased in an underground gay disco from 2080, it’s going overboard that’s making him a fool.

I only skimmed it the first time. Now, having read it in its entirety I have a few points to make and questions to ask. First, I am not trying to change your mind about Adam. If you don’t care for him or his singing, that’s fine. I simply want to address the statements you made. I don’t know what ^_^ is. Butch-twink = tough young gay bottom or a lesbian with a fondness for wife-beater-tee-shirts and very worn out boots. I’m bi—compelled to explain that it’s not because I am indecisive, I just love people from the inside out (corny yes, but also true.) I was raised in a very unconventional way by an unconventional person and was always encouraged to celebrate being different. But enough about me.

Your first paragraph suggests that I feel that homophobia is the primary reason people dislike Adam. I don’t feel that way. If any comment I made leads you to believe that then you may be reading my responses out of context. I personally love Adam’s performances but they are not Idol performances and people tuning into see Clay Aiken-Taylor Hicks-David Cook probably will not get Adam. I understand that. I don’t get them, so we’re even. I am not a fan of American idol. I never watched it before this season. I have been aware of it , but not interested in it. Adam compelled me to tune in each week. I cannot describe all the ways in which he has impacted my life without sounding tard-like so I won’t.

I also get the sense you think I don’t like Kris. If you read my comments you will find I like him very much. Like you, I appreciate his open-mindedness and compassion. I think he has moments of attractiveness (perpetuated by visions from fanfic), though he is not my type. He is a passionate performer and I like his sound. I never watched Idol in the way I suspect most idol fans do. I didn’t tune in to see a competition. I tuned into to see Adam. I rarely watched the other performers. I didn’t vote until the top 5. That’s when I saw the competition thing more clearly. I saw what was at stake. I wanted Adam to win. He came in second. I cried. Then I got over it. BTW, who is Ricky?

“Some of you forget” You have lumped me in with a group of people that you deem unsophisticated enough to know the difference between good and bad singing. This makes you seem sort of cocky. Adam Lambert is a very good singer. His voice is dynamic. Yes, he showed off, but it was a singing competition. You may not like the tone or delivery of his voice but your personal preferences do not negate his talent.

Modesty is not a virtue it’s a hindrance in competitive situations. Adam was never cocky on the show nor in any other situation. He was never rude or obnoxious. He always took criticism well. During interviews and bantering with Seacrest he was charming and articulate. He was polished in a way the other contestants weren’t. He is sarcastic, but so am I. Remarks to crazy fans may seem like rude behavior, but his fans do step out of line. He is merely setting boundaries with what is and isn’t acceptable. If Kris employed those tactics maybe that Italian woman wouldn’t have gotten her tongue inside his mouth.

I think more was expected of Adam. More is still expected of him. More will always be expected of him.

For you to see Adam through my eyes you need to google a photo of him in High School or Jr. High. In it, he has dark red hair and is wearing a polyester suit with a bow tie. His teeth are yellow and in braces. He is fat. That is Adam Lambert. Everything else is smoke and mirrors. And, unlike the “mega hottie,” Adam struggles with his self image everyday. He has learned to be comfortable in his own skin. He has learned to be confident. He has learned to be free. Adam marches to the beat of a different drum. He see things with child-like optimism where everything is possible and you are only limited by your imagination. I have nothing but respect and admiration for that philosophy and for anyone that can fearlessly stand before the world and say here I am. I am different. It’s ok if you don’t get it. Glad I got your attention.

Oh, and he’s hung like a horse, which goes a long way with my penis envy. 🙂

    • October 31, 2009 8:13 am

It all depends on what you find appealing really – there are no wrongs or rights about entertainment. And Kris, from what I have saw and read, is very endearing – I do really like him (it is hard to hate on someone when you are drooling over their hotness, I am very shallow in that regard I admit – and I REALLY liked the snippet of dodgy video posted here the other day with one of his new songs – forget the title but it sounded great). But as far as judging their personalities, I could counter argue the same about Adam. He is always polite, gracious and thankful for his fans – only he has reminded OTT fans not to feel so entitled. Fair comment – and am sure anyone on this site – in fact is that not what this site is all about – laughing and snarking about the OTT fans who, say, got upset cos Adam didnt appear at a barricade one night or somethin then give him twitter-grief over it etc- they are out of order. He is just honest and open. During Idol I can’t remember anybody having a bad comment about Adam, behind the scenes it was reported that he was very generous with his time and helping and supporting the other contestants. Since Idol he always tweets a shout out when the other Idols had their music out to support them. And if you have so much stock in Kris and his opinion, then trust him when he says Adam is a great guy and they are great friends – I think he even went so far as to say he loves Adam (tho I bet not quite as much as Adam loves Kris 🙂 wink wink).

What I don’t understand is why Adam is found so unpleasant. He is an OTT performer who can take on different genres and play with them all.
“(see: going overboard to be shocking for the sake of caricature, rather than being a real person)” so being a talented, flexible, different (different in that there is nobody around right now like Adam who is mainstream) and flamboyant entertainer means you are not being a real person? What is a “real” person? Perhaps you can define the meaning of life too? If Adam is not a real person do you suppose he really IS an alien from planet Fierce?

It was Billy Bush. I don’t know that much about the guy. I get the feeling he’s pretty conservative or just likes to stir up trouble. Kris didn’t play into it and Bush let it go. The media knows controversy sells. I think it’s predominantly Kris being asked about Adam. It doesn’t seem to phase him. The guy is far more evolved than I am and most of humanity if he’s the real deal.

“I’ll take a wild guess and venture to state I do not think you, Miz Kimberly, are not a card carrying member of LBGT community.” — HUH

You are correct; I am not. But it doesn’t stop me from wondering how everyone, not just Glamberts, have been responding to Adam Lambert. Even before I came upon these comments, and though I’m not gay, I strongly believed this was not helping the more traditional gay community. Yes, people should have free expression without consequence, the right to be themselves as long as they are not harming anyone else. But let’s face it, when a person is in the public eye, people are going to make judgements, to think otherwise is naive. Whether Adam likes it or not, he needs the mainstream community to buy his records, if he wants to succeed.

I don’t know what he’s thinking, if he genuinely doesn’t care about those that are not getting him. It almost seems as if he’s thumbing his nose at those that are too plebian to get the artistry, to understand him and his message. I find it all very fascinating and perplexing. To be perfectly honest, I was amazed at how many people were not looking at Adam Lambert through rose-colored glasses.

This has been the most bizarre Idol year. For some reason I’m drawn to the absurd. ::grin::

Kimberly, you’re not looking for how “people” responded, but rather who responded the way you did. Those stats reflect your need for validation more than Adam’s potential for success. Oh, I am a member of my local GLBT community. In fact I designed their logo.

Oh noes! Not only do all the kewl kids think Adam Lambert is a freak, but the entire gay community at large hates him, too! Let’s wait behind the portable after school and beat him up when the bell rings.

I’ll take a wild guess and venture to state I do not think you, Miz Kimberly, are not a card carrying member of LBGT community.

If, you are, I humbly apologize to you — and to everyone, here, that I somehow may manage to offend by daring to offer up an opinion. Yeah, not every gay person in the world luuurrvvvsss Adam Lambert. Almost half of the (gay) guys I know who watch Idol prefer Kris Allen. The-adorable-regular-joe-who-plays-the-guitar-and-can-sing-at-the-same=time winner of American Idol. He’s talented and cute too boot. Still, these are (mostly) same guys ragging on Adam Lambert’s Shoot in “Details” while claiming Madame is trying to play it straight and feel Neil Patrick Harris is the epoitme of what “a male gay celebrity” should be.” Go figure.

I’m not a man, I don’t want to sleep with Adam Lambert and I like Kris Allen, but I also like the “For Your Entertainment” Cover. It’s funny and bizarre –like Adam, himself. And you know what else? I like to laugh. Yeah, Lambert may be a big ass fool sometimes, but the kid can sing like nobody’s business.

He has great big balls of steel hidden under his glittery dress. He may go down in flames. We’ll have to wait and see. I hope not, but I’ll be watching to see what he does next, and hell yeah, I’m buying the album.

Re: Adam Lambert- I’m gay and have never wanted to look like a woman or be a woman- Why do so many gay celebrities want to perpetuate the stereotype of being gay means camping it up with attention-getting feminine looks? I believe MOST gay men are not interested in being drag queens.

Adam, are you a cross dresser, a drag queen or just gay? If your gay, fine express it, let people know, I did. But that cover is over the top even for me and many gay people unless your starting a drag queen career. If not, shame on you for playing up the stereo type of gay people. You have given us all a large step backwards. I won;t be supporting your career at all. Piss off drama queen

What people don’t realize is that it is a mistake from a marketing standpoint. I am over 50 and really thought he was talented on American Idol – but when they flaunt the gay thing – they are going to turn off millions in sales from a more mainstream consumer. There is way to capture his unique personality without looking so over the top gay. If they release this cover – it won’t matter how good the music is – many of his former Idol fans won’t hear it.

I just thought this one was funny.

It matters when a lot of the “defenses” against criticism of the cover involves accusing people of homophobia. Or for that matter, it matters as much as the conservative slant of AOL’s news.

And honestly, forgive me for stereotyping, but I’d imagine if ANYONE is supposed to appreciate Adam’s cover as an ironic, intentionally ridiculous homage to glam rock, it’d be members of the gay community.

Really though, gay or not, it’s definitely more anecdotal evidence that whatever Adam was trying to invoke with the cover, for a good portion of the audience, it didn’t seem to work.

Whether we like it or not, people judge a book by its cover. I try not to, but we are all capable of doing so and I know I have done so.

It’s bothering me that his cover is doing all the talking when it should be the music. And until an actual single is released people are going to base their opinions off a CD cover.

Bad move, marketing team, bad move.

I understand Adam wants to get people talking. He gets off on controversy and it is no surprise that he pretty much says screw you to people who don’t get the album cover…but when it is the majority of the fanbase even that don’t like it…maybe you should take a better look at it yourself. You don’t want to piss off your fans they are going to be your bread and butter. You can get people talking all they want, but you need them to want to buy what your selling as well.

The more stuff I keep hearing versus actually hearing music which should be what matters the most, the more turned off I get.

Let the music do the talking.

And I’m getting to the point of where I feel because of all this hype it is going to be a huge letdown when I do hear a song. I wish I could shake that feeling but the more I hear about how great it is makes me think it’s going to be a crap cd.

For Adam’s sake, I hope I’m wrong, but really stfu about it and let us hear something already.

I actually agree with you that they are building up too much hype without actually letting us hear any of the music. To me, the cover is the least important part of the album. Kris and Allison both have singles out, why hasn’t Adam put one out yet? Just shocking people isn’t going to make his music sell.

Though I have a feeling that this all won’t matter very soon because his single will be amazing! At least I hope. And Lyndsey Parker seemed to really like the album so I have high expectations.

I found this interesting an AOL poll was taken on the Lambert cover. AOL, I believe, has been cited as being more conservative. What I do find interesting is the poll seems to be a one shot vote thing. Not sue if you can manipulate cookies to override and vote a bazillion times. That said the poll count was as follows:

What do you think of the cover treatment?
    Hate it: 79%
    Love it: 21%
92,547 votes That means 73,112 people hated the cover and 19,435 love it.

Are you going to buy Lamber’s album?
    No: 74%
    Yes: 26%
85,898 votes That means 63,565 people refuse to buy Lamber’s album and 22,333 will buy it.

This does not bode well for Adam Lambert. I was really shocked by the total number of votes. Wow! People definitely have a strong opinion about Adam. I still say he’s not promoting himself well. If he doesn’t care what the majority of people think then he’s doing a bang up job. David Cook stated something like, “love me or hate me, just don’t ignore me.” I get the sentiment, but clearly it was a clever sound bite. This is just bad, harmful press as far as I’m concerned. Let’s see if the Glambert army can manage to turn this poll around to their advantage.

This is the first time, I actually saw Adam not fare well on a poll. I guess this is a barometer of what the feelings are like outside the Idol bubble. Not pretty. Cover — bad move especially when true fans hate it as well.

Those are my thoughts of day. Must do something productive now.

Adam is polarizing. The fantards assume that those who don’t like him are “hating” b/c he’s gay, but that’s not necessarily true. While some people are homophobic and wouldn’t like Adam b/c of that, many who don’t like him are turned off for other reasons (i.e. overuse of upper register, OTT, his voice is not ‘pleasing’ to them, etc). That’s okay, some artists just turn off people. Hopefully Adam will garner an audience outside of AI.

The promotion for his album hasn’t really started in earnest. Those of us who like Adam because of his music are STILL waiting to hear a single or at least a snippet of a song.

Most people outside the AI bubble aren’t going to buy an album without hearing the music that’s part of the CD. The majority of the public doesn’t watch idol. It’s silly to assume they’ll buy a CD if they haven’t heard the artist’s material. The fact that the first taste of the album is the cover art is not smart (IMO) since a new artist should be building an audience through the music not the exterior (cover art, photo shoots, etc)

I wish Adam’s early promo pushed the music. The album is coming out in a month and we still haven’t heard the single. That’s ridiculous, we’ve heard Allison’s single and her CD doesn’t drop until a week after Adam’s.

Someone has dropped the ball on that, IMO. Most singles are out two months prior to an album’s release. Kris had LLWD out on or around September 22–which coincides with the November 17 album drop. For all the talk about Kris’ album supposedly being a mess, he seems to be following a logical pattern toward radio rotation and building a non-AI fanbase (Dolphins tailgate performance, scheduled for several Jingle Ball concerts, radio interviews). Adam is attending movie premieres and Star magazine parties. That helps with getting him on TV, but it doesn’t promote his music. Adam isn’t singing at these events.

Die-hard Adam fans are going to buy the album anyway, but the general public has been given no reason to do so. At least not yet.

    • October 29, 2009 3:04 pm

I think AOL must be quite conservative as you say. Yesterday they did a poll asking readers if they believed in global warming – 67% said no! But what is heartening, and I know Amazon is not the greatest barometer for the music industry, but since the cover was released Adam’s presales have moved from #13 UP to #8. Hopefully this is an indication that sales generally wont be hurt too much – he really doesn’t deserve that.

Of course, I still have an AOL address I sometimes use just because I’ve had it for over 10 years. I don’t like changing email addresses or phone numbers. But as far as those using AOL and spending a lot of time on it, I would venture to say they are definitely of a particular demographic.

If nothing else, the cover controversy probably clued in a lot of Adam’s less fervent fans that the album is out there and ready for pre-order. So that’s definitely a plus. And Adam’s fans already know that like-or-hate the cover, they’re probably going to enjoy the music inside.

I don’t think the cover will help gain new fans, but really, that’s what radio play and i-tunes are for. They’ll be what matters in the long run.

That said, I still wish they’d gone with a different cover. He’s not an unattractive guy and there are so many better pictures out there that would be much more appealling.

More than 92,000 people took the time to answer that poll. That is remarkable. Does it matter that is wasn’t particularly favorable to Adam, no. These voters are reacting to a number of factors, some hate American Idol as a platform to launch a serious music career, some are reacting to Adam as a gay man, some hate his fans so much they have come to dislike him and some resent all the attention he has been getting without (in their opinion) proving himself. But he will prove himself. And future polls will generate more favorable results.

Veritas, sounds like you’re not a fan of either, which is fine. I have to admit I like many of the snippets I heard on Kris’s CD. I’m especially interested in hearing I Need To Know. I don’t get the auto-tune opinion. Miley Cyrus’s Party In The USA is auto-tuned, Mairah Carey’s Obsessed, Jason what’s-his-name’s Watcha Say is auto-tuned. The studio version of the CD sounds polished, but I’m glad about that. The way Glamberts were talking, I was expecting a garage band production. My son had me listen to an old blues singer. Back in the day it was one cut, live performance, all instrumentation at once, no retooling, as is product. If Kris’s CD had sounded too Indie, to demo-like, it would be called cheap and unpolished. I think Kris’s CD strikes a good balance.

I heard a snippet of an interview, Billy Bush asking Kris about Adam’s Detail photoshoot. Kris merely said, “Adam is Adam. He likes to shock people.” My opinion, nothing shocking about the Details shoot to me. Although I would have been shocked if Adam had been the nude one. Now that would have been funny. I’m thinking no six-pack there. What’s funny to me is that Adam thinks he’s “shocking”. (And before Glamberts say it’s Kris’s word not Adam’s. I would confidently state, Kris is dead on with what Adam is going for.) I haven’t seen one innovative shocking moment from him. It’s been done before and it’s been done much, much better.

Maybe Adam thinks he’s shocking some grandma in Peoria, but surprise, surprise that grandma is head of his fan club. LOL This is really pretty comical if you really think about it.

I didn’t catch any autotune either. I did understand what some people meant by saying the songs “sounded the same”. I thought that initially as well. I went back and listened to them a few more times and decided that what I had originally thought was due to the fact that when you listen to 30 sec clips of anyone back to back like that, it just gets blended together. On further review, it did NOT come across that way…at least, to me. However, if you are not a fan of Kris, I doubt that you would give it a second, third, or tenth listen. Some people were criticizing it by saying that there were only 2 or 3 songs they liked…isn’t that mostly true of any album? I liked “Written All Over My Face”, and I’m pretty sure I’ll like “I Need to Know”, and “Alright With Me”, from what I heard. There are a couple more that are promising, and a couple I think I won’t care for. I was disappointed about the Mat Kearney song, but Jim C says there are plans for it.(??)If I end up liking 5 or 6 songs, I’ll call it a success.

Funny Glambert comment I saw: “These songs are all terrible! He has the personality of a rock. I’m glad that you all like him cuz he’s sweet….that will serve him well when he is forced to go back to doing mission work!!”…followed by the comment “why do you assume that I’m a Glambert? Everyone that hates Kris is NOT a Glambert!”…..Actually, the vast majority are. People who don’t follow AI, don’t know who Kris is, nor do they ferret out Kris news and leave comments. (I suppose they could be Allison or Danny fans, but I doubt it.)

You can tell the cover “controversy” (read: rabid denial/defense against people pointing and laughing) is dying down because the usual suspects are back putting down Kris at MJs and TWOP.

I’m sure a few are expressing their honest opinion, but I think it’s funny that so many of them have shown up quite a while after Amazon.de took down the clips. Tracking them down on youtube or a download site seems like a lot of effort for a guy that they already know they don’t like.

I’m just glad MJ was able to capture and embed the snippets into her blog before Amazon.de took them down (and BTW she’s the SECOND blogger to think “de” means “Denmark,” SHEESH).

I have to admit, when I started to listen to them I immediately thought Before We Come Undone was overproduced and started to fear for Kris. I’ve listened a few more times and have changed my mind on some things. “Alright With Me” was jarring at first (on VFTW I wrote it was the hyperactive love child of Kenny Loggins and Neil Diamond). I think that was because I didn’t expect something SO upbeat. Now I like it. “Red Guitar” and “Is It Over” I immediately liked, but that be because of the knowledge those were written either by Kris or Kris and Cale. BIG fan of BNS here. “Heartless” I’m still not feeling…if I wanted the hip-hop version I’d listen to Kanye’s, sorry. “I Need To Know” I may like but I need to hear more of it. I thought of “On Our Way” when I heard it since it’s so piano-heavy.

That’s enough from me…funny I totally talked about Kris on an Adam-themed thread. Eh, what comes around goes around…

Oops, hit send too soon. As I was saying, I like both Adam and Kris. I not into “Kradam,” however, and I am not a Glambert. I enjoyed Adam more on AI because I thought his performances were more interesting and I think he has the better voice, but I thought Kris had some good performances too. But we’re talking covers when we talk AI, and I have no idea what their albums will be like. Adam’s could be great and it could be a train wreck. I hope the album cover isn’t an indication of what the music will be like because I think the cover looks like Tard Art!

I would say I still don’t have much of a sense of what Kris’s album will be like because I find it difficult to make judgments based on snippets. Snippets tend to sound alike and I found that those did too. I haven’t seen his Miami Dolphins performance. Perhaps I should go find it. Or play the snippets again.

I think Kris has a great sound. If AI could just get out of his way and let him take the reigns more I think he will do well. As for Adam, I had an uneasy feeling about the album cover for months. I sort of knew it was not going to be received well. AI is a corporation churning out packaged stars. Adam is avant garde and requires a different type of a creative team around him. Hopefully when the money starts rolling in he will be able to assemble his own creative team that has the talent to execute his vision in a more artistic, less commercial way. I do feel very confident about Adam’s music and believe that there will be multiple hits from “For Your Entertainment.” That is my professional opinion and not delusional fan-speak.

Kris Allen’s first single is a cover of an obscure Irish band. Adam Lambert’s is a Pink reject. RCA/19 couldn’t spring for a new song for their first releases?

Just listened to some snippets of songs from Kris Allen’s new album over at MJs. It’s hard to tell from 30 second clips, but they all sound alike, and kind of autotuned. Too bad. I feel sorry for him. Overshadowed by his runner-up, worst coronation song in history (it’s not on the album), depicted in Tard Art with three lips or locked in a passionate embrace with Lambert…like Jimmy Carter said, life is not fair.

I find the whole Kradam thing weird because for most of the season I didn’t realize it had a slash meaning. I thought it just meant “joint fans of both Kris and Adam.” Which makes me really feel skeevy about “Kradison.”

Wow! I never saw the Blake Album cover art until today. Jim looks better. HA! HA! I’ve got to say the similarities between Adam and Blake’s cover are amazing and disturbing. So was Adam ridiculing Blakes’ cover then? I feel soooo much better now that Adam doesn’t care if people get it or not. Tokio Hotel cover’s don’t bother me in the least. One dude is much prettier than Adam. For me, Adam’s cover would have worked so much better in black or white or just more subdued. The colors are effin’ ugly. He’s always doing black and white photo shoots and they work well for him. His skin looks good and the contrast of his hair and face’s complexion is stunning.

I’ve had the same thought as Trish. He may have the vocal chops, but that might be where the talent ends. He seems very confident about his artistry. I don’t care what he’s trying to express or get across — the campy worked. After having seen many a picture of glammed up Adam Lambert, why I even think the intent was irony? Why would anyone? The rest of America who have no idea who Adam Lambert is will most certainly not get it.

Arrogance is not sexy. One more turn-off.

I so agree Kimberly. I completely “get” what Adam was trying to do…but just because I “get” that Adam was being campy, doesn’t mean it was campy done well.

And I get it because I follow Adam, but the general public? Not so much.

I understand Adam is an artist and he knows who he is and what he wants to do, but don’t be so pompous to the point before anyone has even heard a damn single song of yours. I like a little humility with my OTT campy.

He needs to remember we still need to buy it and like it. The tards will line up in slews, but it isn’t the tards that make a successful career, he has to be able to win over the casual listener. I’m glad he stands behind his music, I feel that this is almost refreshing because so few idols have ever been pleased with their first release, however don’t alienate them because some might not “get” the album cover. You want them to buy your music.

Sometimes it makes me wonder though when something is being kept so hush hush if it isn’t really as grand as it is made out to be.

If the album sucks, which I don’t really think it will, we’ll always have the album cover to turn into a kickass folder or trapper keeper.

Yeah…I think the cover of a first album shouldn’t be making the assumption that everyone knows you and “gets” you. Maybe if this had been done a liitle differently, it would’ve been funny…a visible smirk, a knowing twinkle in the eye….but he looks as if he’s taking it seriously. I do think he’s being truthful when he says that it was deliberately campy (b/c afterall, he’s not stupid) but, he’s assuming a LOT of things about his audience. When the vast majority of music buyers see this, they will be put off by it…they won’t think, “Oh, that Adam! This is a such a clever, campy, glam throwback cover!” They won’t think that, b/c they don’t know who the hell he is. You don’t want a bad first impression. Unless Glamberts are going to buy 50 copies each, I’m not sure this will be a hot-seller. People do judge a book by it’s cover. This music will HAVE to be amazing to balance this out. (that’s quite possible….but not a given)

You know, I don’t mind arrogance in a performer, in fact many times I love it, but you’ve got to have the talent to back it up, which Lambert has yet to show. So far he has sung on a karaoke contest, and if that list was true his album songs were mostly written by the usual schlock writers. Adam, you are not rock and roll, please quit saying that. I get that Adam wants to be all “edgy” and stuff, but this is just OTT ridiculous. There’s a fine line between edgy and campy, and Adam is squarely entrenched on the campy side.

I was expecting something really cool and Muse- or Mika-like, or like Bat For Lashes, but this is just cheap, imitation David Bowie. It looks like something that was pulled together before Photoshop was invented, and not in a cool, retro way either. More like something you would find in the CD bin at the local Dollar Store.

While I don’t disagree with you about using confusion as a marketing tool, one has to be careful with that approach. It’s a fine line between trangressive art and just being plain cheesy.

I think Adam and 19 goofed on this. They were clearly trying for something, but I don’t think they’ve achieved it. Maybe I’m wrong, though. Time will tell.

I hope both Adam and Kris do well but IMO, Kris is building an actual foundation for a solid music career while Adam appears to be primping for instant fame. Not to say Adam isn’t interested in being a top-shelf singer. I’m just questioning the approach.

If that’s what Adam wants, cool. Maybe the ends will justify the means. I hope so. But it’s going to rub some non-AI music fans the wrong way. No one is going to spend $10-12 on an album just so they can mock the cover art of someone who they see as some glossed-over poser they don’t really know. They can do that for free while cruising the music section for another CD.

      YMMV, naturally.

This looks like the result of a threesome between Xanadu, Lisa Frank, and a spaceship gone terribly wrong. It’s like a glamour shot for a 1983 Barbizon Modeling School reject.

And why is Adam hunched over like that in his shoulder? Last time I checked, he wasn’t hump-backed like Quasimodo.

I don’t see any casual fan over the age of 10 buying this album in physical form. It would just be too embarrassing to be seen holding it while waiting to check out.

If RCA/19 spent more that $14.99 on this mess, they got ripped off.

This is bad. Real bad. Michael Jackson.

Right now, yes, I prefer Kris’s music over Adam’s. It’s more the Adam hype that’s a turnoff to me. The whole “celebrity” before he’s proven himself issue. TBH I prefer my men masculine. I had a boyfriend that cried more than I did. As far as I was concerned he was way too much in touch with his feminine side.

Black eyeliner is fine, but pastel eyeshadow and mascara — nah. His eyelashes could compete with my own and I’ve been called spider-eyes on occassion. ::gin::

Not feeling this cover at all. The whole background is very, very bad as well.

Oh, and Lauren, I hope your Mom is open-minded when you bring your make-up wearing boyfriend home. Long hair was an issue for my dad, but I brought the long-haired guys home anyway. My dad never said a word. LOL

Also lots of drooling, which I still shake my head at. Seriously, if these women were given the choice of spending the night with Adam , or say….Clive Owen/Daniel Craig/Eric Bana/ANY other square-jawed specimen of percolating testosterone , they’d chose Adam?

I kind of get the appeal. I mean, if my tastes swung toward a hint of androgyny, I would probably dig Adam Lambert. In his normal pictures, he’s got an appealing mix of femininity (with the hair/makeup) and masculinity (in features) that works for him.

What I don’t get is how someone can even pretend to like this horrible cover. It doesn’t even LOOK like him anymore!

Compare nail polish. Debate hair coloring techniques. We could even go dancing. It would probably be a blast to hang out with Adam Lambert.

But sexual attraction? For me, for you (tm-Randy Jackson), no. I think Adam is a good-looking guy, and he had a sexual aura, but on a purely abstract level (for me, for you, dawg). Actually getting into bed with Adam Lambert? No. Fantasizing about getting into bed with Adam Lambert? No. No. No.

You know, Lauren, I think Adam Lambert is a good-looking guy. I just don’t find a man in mascara attractive. It doesn’t do anything for me. I’ve seen really good pictures of Adam and this just isn’t one of them. There are men that are pretty. My son was so pretty when he was a little boy, most people mistook him as a girl. It was a natural pretty, no makeup needed. Now his 6’2″ and 190 lbs. and like his mom just doesn’t dig a guy in makeup. It’s not a gay issue. Hell there’s straight men that enjoy being a bit feminine now and then.

Kris didn’t need airbrushing to look prettier, Adam didn’t either. Adam’s cover looks cheap to me. Bowie’s covers are far more tastefully done. This is not.

The photographer is not the issue. The photo’s where probably lovely before the photoshop assault and airbrushing. The concept, design and technical execution are what I’m finding fault with. It’s not about “not getting it” I understand conceptual art. This falls short. Ironically, my biggest fear about the cover art was that he would play it too safe. LOL. You’re kidding right? Are we looking at the same picture? Kris’s looks like a photograph, this looks like a god-awful painting. Adam has these lines around his neck which older women get, similar to tree rings. You can count how old the women is by them. LOL I’m not trying to be cruel, but let’s be real here. • October 27, 2009 10:52 pm

Kris’ album cover is not THAT photoshopped. Kris has pretty great skin already so there’s no reason to photoshop unless to get rid of a little bump. Adam was very obviously photoshopped…..

The airbrushing is so extreme, its unnatural. It’s not just as if they’ve rid him of every freckle, they’ve taken out marks/indentations that are supposed to be there. No one has lips that smooth.

I think the way the hair sort of hangs off into “space” is odd, too. It just isn’t a great photo. Nothing against Adam Lambert, but I just seriously think they could have done a much better job with it.

    I…don’t know what to think.

I kind of love it and yet I’m kind of going… what. Is. This.

He looks so pretty. His lips look really nice particularly (can’t go into detail; will not be creepy stan) and I like the design. But it’s so…. soft. Airbrushed? No, I think it’s just the implied nakedness. I mean, yes, it is airbrushed, but the particular effect I’m describing isn’t caused by that… maybe by the color scheme? Maybe by the slightly androgynous look?

I’m confused. Very confused. And entertained.

You know, maybe people will buy this album just because the album cover is so entertaining.

I’m starting to think that this could either be a huge hit or a flop again. But, will not ponder such weighty matters. Will continue contemplating Adam’s eye makeup because I’ve got my priorities straight, thank you very much.

    • Sherena permalink
      October 27, 2009 9:10 pm

Also androgynous makes sense cuz the genre he’s going after is so female dominated. In that sense, it’s more normal for him to look more feminine rather than be all rugged manly. Lady Gaga goes a bit for the androgynous too–starting the hermaphrodite rumors for funsies, plus she has a low voice which contributes to that. So I guess Adam’s trying to meet her at the middle, stylistically and on the gender scale. At least with this cover.

What’s left of Adam? The eyes? I recall he wanted to name his album “chameleon”. Well that was a spot-on title because he’s always playing a part, hiding himself.

His hardcore fans will eat this up, but outside his fanbase, I’m thinking not so much. I think at this point, the fans that loved Adam ala Zepplin are probably confused as hell about the album.

I’ve no doubt Adam has a lot of say in things. This cover, I’m sure, was his choice. It’s as tacky and cheap looking as the TFM video.

Once I saw the cover I just had to look at this site. Top Idle and her minions never misses a chance to make fun of something or someone. I knew you guys would hate it. You all get such a charge out of feeling superior and laughing at others. You should thank Adam because he has given you so much. It just boggles my mind how you all talk about Glamberts and how batshit crazy they are-what does that make you? Homophobes, haters? No just pathetic people who have nothing better to do. Why yes, I am an Adam fan and this year has been my first foray into the idol blogsphereand I found it very interesting. Some sites are so creative, some funny, and some are admittedly over the top with fan love. This one is just toxic. Anyway I am sure Adam will be laughing too-all the way to the bank.

Hi Heidi, thanks for coming by. Spread the word! TopIdol would love to share this fabulous blog with all your friends. It will broaden your horizons. Make you think before falling head over heels to blindly praise something. Isn’t that a good thing? It ain’t toxic- it’s just the truth.
      Have great day!

LeighKat, wow idol blogs will broaden my horizons, that’s rich. But I must have struck a nerve- fall head over heels to blindly praise something- where did you get that from what I said? There is nothing that involves the truth in this blog, it reflects your opinions and most of them are toxic. Actually, I’ve been following this blog somewhat for awhile and I use to think it was amusing but it has really started to become just a shit fest over people who are excited and having fun. What a total downer. You have a nice day too but I doubt you will.

Oh dear- I was referring to your quote actually- you know, the one where you said at some sites they are over the top? Or did you forget that already?
As for this blog, I find that when you read a wide range of things, whether they are blogs or news editorials, you tend to learn something new so that you can form your own opinions. You know, balance through research?
Oh well, if you don’t see my point I guess I can learn something from THAT too. won’t bother to share that here though.
          Again- have a nice day!

Ok, let me get this straight. I’m usually good at deciphering what inferior people are trying to say…..

We, the faithful minions, are pathetic and have nothing better to do, and that’s why we post on this site. But, wait, you also browse and post on various blogs. Hmmm. So are you trying to tell us that you too are pathetic and have no life? Yippee, soul mates! OR does this mean you DO have better things to do, but choose to be on these sites? Yikes, loser alert. No, Heidi, just admit it, you are too emotionally attached to a person who’ve never met and take to heart the smallest critiques, like the fact that his album cover is extremely amateurish. Its okay, there are support groups out there for people like you. They meet in the back of your local Krispy Kream.

What the heck is this!? If I saw this advertised in a store I’d keep on walking. It looks like a cross between needing to be on some really good drugs, and needing to revert back to childhood where I want to dress up my Barbies while wearing sparkly leggins, push down socks, and high tops with my hair in a side ponytail.

He looks like a Barbie I need to dress up.

The music better be outstanding, because the casual person seeing this in the freaking store is going to keep right on walking.

Damn, and if people judge music by the cover of an album, yikes.

Legend: A movie starring the then-unfamous Tom Cruise (in skintight boy of the wilds/ Champion of Light gear) and Tim Curry as Darkness (the personification of Evil who looks more than a bit like either the Wild God or Satan, take yer pick). It also heavily involves unicorns and faery folk in some never-was but gorgeous pseudo-medieval setting.

Its worth watching for the culty-flick B goodness.

What bothers me about it not the false eyelashes or the blue hair or the retro font or silly title…it’s the airbrushing. It doesn’t look like art, it looks silly. Period.

Also, the angle of his head and neck to his shoulder makes him look a little like Quasimodo.

I have no idea what this will do to his album sales. His hardcore fans will love this because he looks like the Glittery Alien From Planet Fierce. Other folks, who knows? Certainly some people will be put off by it, but maybe those people wouldn’t buy his album anyway.

I happen to like his voice, and am actually hoping the album is good, but I’m not into the Glittery Alien schtick. Emo hair and long black jacket would have worked better for me. If I buy the album, I’ll have to download it so I don’t have to put the physical CD in a brown paper bag before bringing it to the check out counter.

If I could look you in the eye I would and wouldnt even blink. But I am a BSC Adam fan so my opinion won’t matter right? This album cover is SO ridiculous that it borders on genius. He does look beautiful, but I am not drooling over his eyes and skin or hair – I am giddy because it is SO preposterous and I love Adam even more for it. I guess you either “get” Adam or you just don’t. It really was a delightful surprise to me, and that is what you get from Adam – one surprise after another. The true genius lies in the fact that love it or hate it, it can’t be ignored.
