Longer Snippets of Adam Lambert’s “For Your Entertainment”

November 11, 2009

Thank you, Be Gay Little Bird, for sending this my way — longer clips from Adam Lambert’s For Your Entertainment.

Since I have yet to listen to the original round of shorter snippets, I’ll check this out straight away. (Hey, I was busy.)

For Your Entertainment — title single…it’s ok, catchy…much better than

Music Again — starts off as the perfect montage theme for an 80s movie with an athletic bent (see American Flyers or anything made before 1987 involving skiing.) before descending into The Darkness-at-a-roller-rink. Yeah. The song is super gay, like in an 80s not homosexual way. Like when you called people GAYWAD. This song is a GAYWAD of a song. It makes me want to put on a leotard, sweatband and pop in a Jane Fonda aerobics tape into my brand-new VHS machine that cost $500. Or I could just go drop a couple bills at American Apparel.

If I Had You — I think I kind of like this one. It’s fun.

Play the rest of the tracks HERE while I try to upload them…plus I got other blogging to do this evening.

Ok… had to take a break from Holly and the Sockpuppets.

Apparently, Adam is channeling Baron von Richtofen in the FYE video:

I promise it won’t be all Holly all the time 🙂

Don’t know if I have enough energy to post tonight…hmmm…maybe a couple of photos from Friday? That seems not-very-taxing.

Lol. Holly’s sockpuppetry is quite entertaining. I like how she is able to deny everything she is doing, while she is here doing it.(your “IP address detector is wrong”!!!!)

I can only take so much “psychotic”, before I have to go go back to just “plain crazy.”

ah…Alice Smith put it in perspective for me. YOU’re into singers who sing about their neurotic compulsion to talk talk talk… about everything that nobody cares about. Sorta like being an Idol blogger lol.

Partial Lyrics to the oh so DEEP Do I :

I must express the way it feels to ride all day
without a care, conversation and a coffee
I wanna talk about the good things in my life
I wanna try to be alright
I can care about the way love makes me feel
I can care about the good things that are real
I don’t wanna have to think about the ways that I’m so bad
I don’t wanna have to think about the things that make me sad

there are things that make me smile every day
the jokes we play, the funny things we say
there is nothing like the joy they can see in my eyes
when i think about the man in my life
I can care about the way he makes me feel
I can care because his love makes me feel real
I don’t wanna have to think about the ways that we’ll be bad
I don’t wanna think about the days that we’ll be sad

Hey Alice, they make shrinks for that. And so happy to see that you think “his love makes you real”. Uh, no it doesn’t.

No one said she was deep. Just very cool sounding. However, I can relate to your irritation—Adam’s music is so scrutinized and props are given to lesser talents. You want to just rip those lesser talents to shreds to expose the injustice. It’s why I drink, and by drink I mean… 🙂 Then I chill out and say…it’s not that deep, Adam will be fine.

The fact that the regulars here disdain Adam Lambert’s album is a big WIN for him. The fact that the collective musical brilliance here can’t even see that the snippets are three bars out of order on purpose since they came from the market research group is hysterical. I never saw so many uninformed people comment with authority as on these anti-Idol sites.

steph – that was a pretty lame list of what you “like”. You “listen to” Britney & bands from the 70’s classic rock and a handful of obscure nobodies but post on an American Idol thread? OK, yeah, got it.

Ben Folds? OMG what can even be said. Music (loosely speaking) for the suicidal from a guy with no voice? wow, just wow. That was a joke, right?

LMAO at the lengths people go to to try and make up pseudo-rational excuses to post negativity about Adam Lambert. The reason for this, however eludes me.

“The fact that the collective musical brilliance here can’t even see that the snippets are three bars out of order on purpose since they came from the market research group is hysterical.”

When you say three bars out of order, what do you mean? Is it that “chopped” sound I hear on Music Again? The pregnant pause in Pick U UP? Or, something entirely different?

You are kinda fierce. I hope you come back. 🙂

(I never use fierce, ever. I will get shit for it too, I am sure.)

Can’t the reason just be that we (and by this, I don’t mean everyone, since it’s pretty clear to anyone with any amount of reading comprehension that there are “regular” commenters here who actually do like Adam’s music) don’t care for these snippets?

I don’t dislike Adam (just a certain subset of his fans) but his music just doesn’t do it for me. The snippets, chopped up or not, haven’t changed my mind. It’s okay though, you’re free to like it. I’m free not to.

That’s fine. But I do like it. And saying so isn’t tarding. I have said when I hated things he’s done without being called a hater. So, why can’t I state when I like something?

I really like Adam. I have always been clear about that. The release of his music is exciting for me and I am caught up in it. I’m not getting his name tattooed on my ass or anything, just happy about him moving to the next step. I am not saying this is the best album ever created in the history of music… I’m just saying he makes me…. want to listen to music again.. (now that part was tarding)

I will try to curb my tard-lite comments. 🙂

i’ll wait until the album comes out….i am never impressed by clips and i never immediately LOVE an album on my first listen. i will say that ryan tedder and his songs are getting on my last nerve. my initial reaction to his song was “yawn, next”. he’s becoming too big for his own good. i recall seeing his band at the Roxxy when they couldnt fking sell a show…he seemed less of a douche back then.

  6. Burgundy LaRue permalink
    November 12, 2009 2:15 pm

    My kneejerk reactions:

Sleepwalker: Ryan Tedder really needs to come up with another beat for his songs. Sleepwalker = Already Gone = Halo. That said, it’ll probably be a hit if it’s released.

If I Had You: kinda fun. One of those songs that fits in with what’s played on Open House Party. I should be ashamed that I listen to that every weekend, but alas: my shame-o-meter has never been calibrated.

Pick U Up: if Zac Efron channeled Gerard Way from My Chemical Romance, this is how it would sound. It’d be perfect for a High School Musical soundtrack. Not sure if that’s what Adam was going for, though. Not bad, but doesn’t exactly fit Adam just right.

Whataya Want From Me: it seems so juvenile. You know who’d sound good on this? Jordin Sparks or Allison Iraheta. They should have given this song to Jordin or Allison and found something else for Adam, something with some maturity and depth.

Music Again: can’t get into it. It’s got this Boy George vibe to it. If I want that, I’ll YouTube Karma Chameleon and listen to the original. VERY dated.

Based on these snippets, I can’t say I’m feeling the album so far. Maybe Adam’s got better stuff to offer, but he needs to get it out there fast because what I’m hearing isn’t that hot.

The Mika reference is spot on. Adam could have been a variation of Mika or Rufus Wainwright or Kate Nash, but instead all this sounds like something Boy George or Prince would have rejected in 1985.

It’s not winning me over so far.

Karma Chameleon is still a good song. Music Again will never be a good song.

Well, he did get a lot of tracks not specifically written for him: the Pink song, the Rivers Cuomo song, the Muse song and the Gaga song. I have a feeling even Music Again wasn’t written for him either.

I don’t want to say burlesque but doesn’t it bother you that he tries so hard to emulate Freddie Mercury and has that strange British accent? No? OK. Maybe it won’t bother other people either. I didn’t think they would, but they catered for Glamberts and eat it up they will. Rest? I don’t know.

I think MJ will be dreading Wednesdays for the next couple of months. By the way, what did Kirsten say yesterday, Lambert fans sounded livid?

This kind of fan-obsessed scrutiny is unique to Idol. Most music artists don’t have every syllable dissected. Every move measured. Every thought-process debated.

In the grand scheme of things, Glamberts, tards, haters and a fan-goddess(me) won’t matter. Adam is transitioning from “reality” to real world. It’s sink or swim. The general music buying public will judge him. I bet not one will even notice the bad typography on his album cover or think he’s trying to sound like Freddie Mercury. Because at this point it’s about his artistry.

I think the article you quoted is essentially saying that quite a few famous acts gave Lambert material which he successfully turned into gay cabaret and congratulating his guts for doing so? Or am I reading it wrong?

At this point even I feel like spamming the radios or something, that’s how bad I feel for the kid. I mean for all the entertainment he provided and all the money he made for that crappy show he should at least be able to buy a house. I hope he sells tons (but then fades away because his ego is really annoying me).

“The success of former American Idol contestants is measured not only by who helps them, but by what material they get and how well they make it their own. Everyone from Lady Gaga to Muse chips in here with perhaps the strongest, most flavorful batch of tunes to reach an AI vet, and Lambert’s polymorphous vocal skills unite dancefloor strut and hard-rock pomp in a convincing glam package. Flamboyance with a fire underneath, this is mainstream glitz liberated by both guts and chops; the gay equivalent of gospel.”—Spin magazine

I think it will do well too. Adam’s performance on AMA will be an important one. Though, I wouldn’t classify that show as being A list, it does have a very impressive lineup. If Adam does what Adam does best, he will win over non-idol viewers.

I just read an article in Rolling Stone in which Adam describes his vision for the performance and set design as a stylized 1930’s old Hollywood meets Berlin, very dark, black and white with pencil mustaches. It sounds hot.

Ok. I just listened to all the snippets at MJs…I guess it’s just the direction he chose to go here…it’s just not my “thang”. I’m disappointed. Loved him on the show, and the tour performances. Maybe something else will grab me…MJ didn’t have all the songs up. I’m sure there’s something that’ll grab me. The first time I heard “Pokerface”, I hated it..but then I couldn’t get it out of my head. (except for Cartman’s cover, of course, which has been AWESOME each and every time I’ve listened).

      Wait for the these:
      Soaked
      Loaded Smile
      Broken Open
      Fever

If one of them doesn’t move ya, then he’s just not for you. You do have to give him credit for variety. Few artists take this kind of risk. I think it will pay off. Hearing Adam sing a song without seeing him sing also loses something in translation. With music we usually hear it first then see who is singing. With Idol we see them first and then hear them. It skews our perception a bit. When you see him perform these live or see the videos and allow the shock of “WTF is this” wear off, you may like it. “Ring of Fire” scared a lot of people, now when you ask it’s like their favorite performance.

Music Again is so terrible. OMG. I get the retro sound it’s aiming for, but other than the chorus, it is terrible. Xanadu is edgier than this shit.

    ________
Damn and I sure loved my Xanadu, but you’re right, Top Idol, Xanadu could kick “Music Again” ass.

Let’s see, Adam aimed for campy with an album cover, a missed that target by a wide mile. Tries to be retro with “Music Again” and I get a copy cat version of wanting to be “Queen”, “Mika” and “The Darkness” making it sound completely awful and dated.

“If I had You” I’d love if I was out having a good time, but probably not on my morning drive to work. I’ve had teh chorus to that stuck in my head and I found it the least “ick” of all of them.

They did, when I was six. I was obsessed with Xanadu. Nothing wrong with loving things of your childhood in fondness, but far from the musical tastes I listen to now.

I’m not saying the whole thing sucked because I haven’t heard it. I’m judging off what I was given, I’ve only heard 5 “longer snippets” and 3 of those 5 were my initial least favorite after the 30 second snippets. So I’m not counting the whole damn album out, just saying meh to what Ive gotten so far.

My beef is mostly with “Music Again”, the crappiest wannabe song ever.

A lot of everything. I do love my Britney(sad but true), and some pop artists, but honestly not too much of current radio (Top 40 wise) truly appeals to me unless its some of my tried and true favorites like Kelly Clarkson, Gwen Stefani, Britney, Christina, Justin Timberlake. Of course a good catchy song always can change minds.

I do love some more “singer/songerwriter” type music (John Mayer type music except I hate John Mayer) like James Morrison, Sara Bareillis, Ben Folds is one of my favorites. I do lean towards singer/songwriter stuff.

I listen to a lot of classic rock mostly. My favorite bands are The Beatles and Led Zeppelin, and I also listen to a lot of The Doors, CCR, and Tom Petty pretty heavily, but that’s just scraping the surface. IF I listen to the radio(a rarity anymore, I’m pretty much an ipoder) it’s a classic rock station.

MY FAVORITE is probably the undiscovered artists that I get in on before the ever really hit it big. I’m currently obsessed with Kate Miller-Heidke. She’s from Australia but I saw her open for Ben Folds here in the US and I love her album. Very pop but wonderful and I’d love if she was more popular here.

I will check her out. I like variety too. I never listen to the radio. If it weren’t for Adam, I wouldn’t even know who was in the top 40. I shop iTunes by category, not who’s on the charts. Today driving home Wlico’s “Handshake Drugs” came up on my ipod, and I wondered if it ever was a top 40 song. It never entered my mind before. I just liked it. I know all the words, and it suits my half-octave range. However, today I wondered. Then I thought “who cares,” as I belted out the chorus.

The lyrics are what kills it for me. The music, especially the guitar sounds really good. It also sounds chopped up, like it’s different songs put together and I’m not sure if that is because it’s a snippet, or the song is that disconnected.

I hope the guy does well. Heck, I hope that 99% of Idol contestants find some sort of success (exception: ConstanSucks). But for all the the talk about this album furthering the resurgance of glam pop, I don’t see it. Maybe I’m missing it, though. *shrugs*

Alright, I don’t exceptionally like any of them. Some are better than others but they are just alright.

Not impressed. Might like more if I was out clubbing with girlfriends but now that I’m passed the college days those clubbing days are few and far between.

    It all sounds kinda dated.

Might be the point, but a point that was lost on me. This could have been made more fresh. I find Mika to be extremely now and I heard some Mika references in “Music Again” but instead of making it sound new, Adam made it sound old…way old.

Amen to Huey Lewis re: Music Again. It also reminds me of the songs on the soundtrack of Back to the Future movies. It’s aight.

Oh. Ooh, I don’t know. I thought it was strange that most of the snippets didn’t feature the chorus of the songs, and now I know why. On the upside, is anybody else getting a latin freestyle vibe from If I Had You? It makes me want to tease my hair and dance to some Stevie B. Or this classic:

Oh dear. I’m not sure if the longer clip did “Music Again” any justice. A song I was potentially liking just flew off the radar for me.

Holy crap. The chorus is great, but the verses? eeep. Gonna go find my roller skates and my neon leggins.

    The cheese is killing me.

Going to listen to the others.

“Sleepwalker” might as well be called “Halo” Ryan Tedder you are a douche who can’t do anything but the damn same song with different words.

“Pick U Up” Didn’t like it to begin with, don’t like it anymore now.

I wonder why they’re doing this…. some people are saying that they’re testing the waters for a second single, but in that case I don’t see why Fever isn’t there. Also, the feedback they’re getting is only from people who are already Adam fans, so it doesn’t indicate radio appropriateness or anything.

I have heard all the leaked ones. So far, there are five. Four of them are really good.
I am hoping to hear “Fever,” “Soaked”, “Broken open” soon. If I hear “Loaded Smile” I probably will faint from excitement. The album is #2 on itunes pop chart right now. It debuted at #1. Adam will be fine.

His next release should be a ballad. I suspect it will be “Soaked.”

I retract that opinion based on the fact that only these songs were released. I don’t know why these where selected or who exactly is behind the release, but if it was RCA/19, then maybe it IS to get a sense of what the public wants next. If that’s the case and executives are lurking I hope they come here, read thiss and choose PICK U UP!

Music Again. It’s like Freddie Mercury fell into a big pile of Huey Lewis. I ….I…just don’t know. I’ll have to hear something else.

I didn’t care for this from the original snippets. I like it slightly better now, I don’t think I could ever get past the”many moons” lyric, though.

All the music critics and Michael Slezak’s mother, seem to love this. The Justin Hawkins connection must impress them. There are 10 songs I like better.

Oh, just so know it IS suppose to be very eighties. That is the whole point, Justin Hawkins and Darkeness created this ’80s nouveau vibe that is big in Europe.
