19E didn’t want Adam Lambert to be “too gay” in OUT Magazine.

November 16, 2009

Aaron Hicklin on Adam Lambert

Adam Lambert’s handlers were wary of Lambert appearing on the cover of the Out 100 issue of Out Magazine. Oh, and they also requested that the interview not be too gay.

Are you kidding me? It’s Out Magazine. It’s like doing an telling someone who’s interviewing with Vogue to not be too stylish.

There were rumblings of Out’s dissatisfaction with 19E’s handling of the interview last week, but Aaron Hicklin’s Editor’s Letter confirms everything. So Lambert was only able to appear on the cover because the straight gay rights activist Cyndi Lauper was also photographed with the group?

Like I’ve said before, I wish we lived in a world where sexuality was never an issue, and I don’t understand why someone’s sexuality is ever considered “news”. No one comes out as straight, so why does one need to “come out” as gay?

I’m sure 19 Entertainment / American Idol can argue they just want Lambert to appeal to “the masses”, but even making such an assumption is pretty ridiculous. Everyone knows Lambert is gay and putting him in photos caressing gorgeous foreign models with lady parts in Details and having him describe that time when he was drunk and went down on a chick in Out isn’t really doing much but infuriating the gay community and giving Lambert’s crazy adult female fans a cruel glimmer of hope.

And many of Lambert’s fans would just claim he’s trying to push boundaries and be controversial, but its not coming off like that, especially to those who don’t think he shits rainbows (And for chrissake, just because I do not think the man shits rainbows does not mean I dislike the guy. He just doesn’t shit rainbows. I don’t know anyone who actually shits rainbows. Maybe Toucan Sam or the Magical Skittles Fairy, they might shit in shades of R.O.Y.G.B.I.V.) If Lambert’s such a boundary-pushing artiste, then why isn’t he telling his management to market him as is — simply, Adam Lambert? Or is this “him”? In an attempt to possibly foster Lambert’s alleged electrifying individuality & knack at pushing buttons, 19E isn’t really doing a great job with their brand-new “superstar pop idol” and Lambert is more or less just proving he doesn’t care what he has to do to be famous.

And a desperation to be famous isn’t ever sexy, gay or straight.

Cue the YOU’RE A SELF-HATING GAY MAN letters to Aaron Hicklin in 3…2…1…

ETA: I’ve finally been able to read more of the Out article and I must say, I am impressed with Lambert’s discussion about his fellow Idol tourmates. I also like learning that HBD “isn’t that religious”. SWEET. But I mean, Lambert even says okay things about Gokey. Anyway, I think Lambert has the right issue about gay vs. straight…but it shouldn’t always be an issue. I’ve said that before. Out Magazine is one thing, but not every interview he does has to be about his sexuality. A lot of interviews with this guy are the same damn thing, just a retread of the over-the-top fawning first seen in the Rolling Stone cover story. Big fraking deal. Adam Lambert is gay. And he went to Burning Man! And he did drugs at Burning Man! OMG.

Ironically, Burning Man is probably one of the few places where sexuality really is a non-issue. I just learned one guy in my camp was gay…yesterday. I had never thought about it either way. Because it just doesn’t matter, and out there, it’s quite telling how the labels we often cling to in the real world simply fade away (Well, furries are still ridiculed…but in a fun-loving way…you can’t NOT ridicule furries, even in Black Rock City). You can have entire conversations with people without ever mentioning what you do for a living or your sexual preference.

Kris seems like a real straight guy.
He is a real straight guy. He’s very straight. He’s just…cute.

He’s pretty.
He’s pretty. He’s a pretty boy. You know? And he’s nice. He’s a really nice guy. One of the things that I think is so refreshing and cool about him is that he’s from Arkansas — and this is me being small-minded — I just kinda figured that the acceptance of people like me in Arkansas is probably a lot lower than here. And he’s very open-minded to people’s lifestyles and he doesn’t judge. He’s a good guy.

To have someone who is very religious and who feels like that –
That’s the funny thing, is that he’s not very religious, I don’t know where he got that label. Danny [Gokey] is very religious.

Let’s talk about Michael Sarver, who seemed at first to be a religious guy who wasn’t very comfortable with you being gay. But when the tour encountered “God Hates Fags” protesters, he was all over Twitter condemning them and defending you.
He’s got a really good heart, that guy. He does. And I think that he represents a large portion of our country, good people who are just scared of what they don’t know. We didn’t even have that many conversations about it directly, but it’s just another example of acceptance. We just got along with each other. He just wants everybody to like him, and he wants to like everybody. It’s very simple, what his needs are. And I have very similar needs. We cut up all the time, backstage and on the bus. We get along great. I think what he realized was that it doesn’t fucking matter. And he got past that.

Was Danny very religious in a way that made you uncomfortable?
No, never uncomfortable. Danny’s a little bit more fundamental in his views than I think Michael is. And I don’t think his views are going to change. But it didn’t get in the way. We had a number of conversations on religion and morality. And it wasn’t for either one of us to try to convince the other, it was just to kind of learn. He was very cool with that, just having a conversation. We had some really deep conversations about God.

Oh to be a fly on the wall…A Gokey-Lambert conversation about God.?! Ha. That might be hysterical. If this is indeed true, christ, Adam Lambert can put up listening to a lot of bullshit. Much more than I ever could. It’s probably why he hasn’t flown into a public rage over the antics of his batshit crazy fans.

Adam is LUCKY he is getting the press he does. He hasn’t even put out his cd and he has had more press than any other Idol contestant in history…good and bad (and in the entertainment industry there is no such thing as bad press because it is more exposure).

Adam has the backing of Hollywood and big wigs in the music industry, plus countless entertainment writers and music critics, so don’t cry for me Argentina.

Kris, who actually won the show, Danny and Allison combined have not had 1/16th of the press Adam has gotten, so what are his fans complaining about if we talk about how ridiculous this all is and have a good laugh?

    lol…now where were we.

From what I’ve recently read, Shana K. the journalist who interviewed Adam stated it was about toning down the gay political issues. In essence, keep it light don’t broach any political minefields in order to keep the mainstream happy. Still don’t think the warning was necessary, considering it was OUT magazine. Logic doesn’t hold up for me.

I would have rather heard Lambert’s thoughts on Prop 8 and the March on Washington over his attempts at cunnilingus, though. And I’m not even big on famous people expressing their political views, but in a magazine like Out (especially the Out 100 issue), it would have been nice to hear about that and more about his album.

From a mainstream point of view, I believe people can handle hearing or reading a thoughtful, articulate opinion that is not loaded with vitriol or finger-pointing on any given subject, even if it goes against their belief system much better than say Adam in full makeup or dressed freakishly. People were *freaked* out by Adam’s album cover. Whether they should have been or not or whether that pisses some people off that they were is not the issue. They have a right their opinion. But I do believe, those with a brain cell working wouldn’t be freaked out by an intelligent opinion. I’m as mainstream as you can get — heterosexual woman with two kids (boy and girl), 12 years of Catholic schooling. I do believe people have free will, the right to make their own life choices. My mom always said you have to listen to your heart, if you can live with those choices, if they feel right, so be it.

I could have done without the stinky vagina story myself.

In his Idolatry interview he talked about choosing songs like Black or White, Mad World and (not that he chose it) Change is Gonna Come, as his message about human rights issues. But, for him he would just rather focus on music not politics. I figured he wasn’t well versed in gay political issues and didn’t want to have to defend or agree with something he didn’t know that much about.

But then I heard “Master Plan,” a bonus tract on his cd and it is essentially is an anthem to gay rights, from the prospective of a new generation.

I don’t know what to think about this interview. I don’t know what was said to whom. Adam is an open book. What was he not suppose to say? What didn’t he say? There are more questions unanswered than answered.

Here’s the Katy Perry cover: http://gawker.com/5084483/katy-perry-kissed-a-girl-and-out-magazine-liked-it-but-i-didnt

Adam’s cover is similar. It doesn’t make sense that 19/RCA would be worried about Adam being too gay on it. I haven’t seen other covers, but if they look like this I’m thinking someone is not being forthright. Adam has a good sense of fashion style. I really don’t think he’d do a cover shoot in drag when other men on the cover are wearing traditional suits.

But then again, what do I know …

Adam is NOT responsible for his fan’s behavior anymore than David Cook is responsible for that crazy woman Top Idol dedicated THREE consecutive blogs to.

Why is Cook a victim of his fame and Adam a perpetrator? Same bullshit. Different set of rules. Why is that?

Thanks for the update to the post. This speaks to what I feel also. His sexuality is a part of who he is but, he seems to contradict himself so often by saying his sexuality in a none issue yet he is constantly discussing it- in the most vulgar terms possible.
I just don’t get that? Is it fair to say it’s just to be sensationlist? I think so- and let’s face it, that’s “fame whoring”
While making the public aware of you is important in the music industry, there are just better ways to do it.
I started out being a fan of Lambert- his vocals are just out of this world; however, the overbearing vulgarity in every single interview is a real turn off.
He doesn’t need to tell the media or 19 to “fuck off”- there are smart, tactful ways to handle these questions that he keeps getting asked. Other celebrities do it all the time.

I would love to hear more about his experiences growing up that aren’t X-Rated. Like when he described how he came out to his mother, or his time touring the world. While it’s not relevant to his music, it still deals with what makes up his history and, to some extent, provides insight into his musical influences.
Does the Out article touch on things like this? I am gonna go see if I can read the entire article online.
Hell, like him or not, Adam certainly keeps the blogosphere buzzing!

I have seen and read many (if not all) of Adam Lambert interviews. HE ANSWERS QUESTIONS!!!!! He never starts with “hey, I’m gay lets talk about it” The media (most, not all) asks the questions that will create the most buzz. They think people still want to hear about. I don’t don’t. Maybe some people still do.

The media can ask any question they want, but its the answers that get the press. “i ate a girl out and she didnt smell clean”…puhleeze, the interviewer didnt drag that out of him. He volunteered this information. The guy is smart, he knows how this works. He can either be candid and own it (ex: Madge, Lady Gaga). OR he can be more guarded/tactful with his answers and practice the “focus on the music” mantra his been preaching.

I’m sympathetic to Adam about this issue, because it’s never easy for someone in his position.

The fans of his going off on the editor of Out are pretty fucking annoying though. You can agree with 19E’s tactics or not, but that doesn’t mean that he can’t criticize them as he sees them.

It’s not “stabbing Adam in the back” to criticize his management, and he actually says some nice things about Adam himself in the letter.

It’s interesting however to see some of Adam’s fans using this to attack the gay community in general. Aren’t the non-fans supposed to be the homophobic ones?

Both sides have a point….I cant blame 19 or Adam for being careful with the marketing of his sexuality. Its a tricky situation. And I cant blame OUT editors for being frustrated that an entertainer who has the chance to make homosexuality mainstream, seems to be selling out and going soft.

I do have an issue with Adam, who keeps saying fans/the media should focus on his music and not personal life. He has agreed to appear on two covers that sensationalize and highlight his sexuality (RS and Details). And yes, it makes sense to capitalize on it since the public wanted to know. However, you cant have it both ways. You cant complain about the unfair focus on your private life, yet indulge to readers that you ate a girl out and she was not clean. That’s a sound bite. You know that’s going to get play over anything else you say in the interview. I understand the RS cover, it was needed. But he then he goes off to shoot Details and talk about bi-curiosity (again, exploiting his sexuality) and now in OUT there is the down under incident. Adam, just own it. Admit that your sexuality is part of the lure and give the middle finger to anyone who cares to pass judgment. But don’t act as if this isn’t an issue or pretend you are innocent in building the hype. You are contributing to this hoopla.

“Apparently the sparkle cows became experts on the gay community because they voted on an idiotic reality show.” — blacklisted

Perfectly stated! Would they really be fighting this fight if it was someone other than Adam?

They google everything, finding links, offering insight into a world that is completely foreign to some of them. It’s a joke.

Adam is the most exciting thing that has ever come into their lives and that is a very sad commentary as far as I’m concerned.

From a business standpoint, the whole thing is out of control. Adam’s got 3 singles out there which is very confusing. TFM didn’t pan out, FYE doesn’t seem to be making headway and now the new song. It just seems all over the place. RCA can’t be that inept. I would think they’d be a lot more on top of things. Kris was asked about the CD cover and knew that people were “freaking out about it”. He also said anyone that knew Adam wouldn’t think anything of it. “Adam is Adam.”

Are they reining Adam in after the cover art popeater poll? 80% hating the cover. 76% not buying the CD. Are the numbers troublesome to them?

Simon Fuller’s eggs aren’t all in the Adam Lambert basket so to speak. If the mainstream isn’t going to embrace Adam, Simon Fuller will cut his losses. I’ve done my share of writing off accounts for a company that was no where as huge as Simon Fuller’s Kingdom.

OTT fantards pale in comparison to the drama enfolding. There may be some fires Adam might not be able to put out before there’s irreparable damage.

In all seriousness, what demographic is Adam going after? Besides AI viewers and women over 40. My head hurts from this shit. I’m honestly at a loss. They’re all playing games, all have an agenda. It sucks.

    I AM LIVID!!!!!! TOO GAY!!!!

19 ok’d the album cover, but cautions OUT to not make Adam look too gay? That makes NO SENSE! FYE album cover is as GAY as he could look without having an actual dick in his mouth. Do I hate 19— yes, I do! However, to suggest that they are de-gaying him is ridiculous. You can’t un-ring a bell. His gayness is very popular, in my opinion. The straight contestants aren’t getting this kind of media attention. As for him being joined on the cover by others, this is not an Adam Lambert story. This is the 100 most outstanding and inspiring men and women of the year. Of course others should be on that cover! TOP IDOL you would be the first to balk if they weren’t. If OUT were having all these issues then why bother to include him at all? OH, could it be to exploit him before fucking him over?

I am an active member of my local gay community, and the daughter of gay parents, I have witnessed this kind of back-biting before when members fail to live up to an expectation of what REAL gay is. Hell, a good portion of the gay community doesn’t even recognize bi-sexuality as a legitimate orientation. I guess it’s not GAY ENOUGH! As someone who is bi-sexual I have experienced that first hand. I also have had sex with two gay men, it is not unheard of for gay men to be curious.

All I have to say to Top Idol’s snarky remark “desperation to be famous” is GLAMBULGE, GLAMBULGE, GLAMBULGE,GLAMBULGE, GLAMBULGE!

I repeatedly state I do not think sexual orientation should EVER be an issue, but the audacity of 19E telling Out Magazine…doing an Out 100 piece on influential gays of 2009 should basically “tone down the gayness” is RIDICULOUS.

I also think everyone is bi-curious to some degree (see my frequent mentions of the Kinsey Scale) and it makes me laugh hysterically when batshit crazy Glamberts claim Out is pissed because Lambert is bisexual and they can’t handle otherwise.

I find this editor’s letter not only undermines his publication, it casts a shadow over the accomplishments of those it is suppose to be honoring.

I want to make it perfectly clear that this goes way beyond fan nonsense. This is a very big issue for me. If this happened to ANY gay person by this magazine I would be responding just as vehemently. Everyone knows 19 is a pimping cheese factory. Everyone knows Adam is gay. What is the benefit.? Who is getting something from this? What is the point?

Top Idol: I have resigned myself to accepting your opinion on that particular topic. The Glambulge thing was meant to add levity. It was the best I could come up. Sorry, it failed to amuse you. 🙂

….19 is trying to make Adam ambiguous because? Hello, he didn’t even have to say he was gay for people to know it. Attempting to make him “bisexual”(which I do think is the attempt 19 is trying for) isn’t going to fly. This really kinda bugs me because 19 is taking a freaking step backwards with this. I understand the making him appeal to the masses, but being gay hasn’t stopped the frauen from wanting him any less.

This also just makes me feel like 19 is saying “no, it’s not okay to be gay, we are going to make Adam look like he is an equal opportunity person.” wrong. just wrong.

I don’t know how much SAY Adam necessarily has in his own marketing at this point, but maybe he doesn’t care that he’s being marketed as this amazingly “bisexual” man. It does slightly come across as desperate to be famous, and it does rub me wrong. 19 rubs me wrong for doing it, Adam rubs me wrong for not stopping it if he could.

If they didn’t want Fantasia to act African American? Does 19 not realize that by pandering to the Adam-obsessed demographic, they’re limiting his potential for success? Having someone gay reaching such a varied audience, such as the AI audience, and being a normal fucking person without constant sexual whatever would be an excellent “teaching moment.”

If you want it to be about the music, then talk about the music! Maybe tie in how his life experiences affect his musical tastes and decisions he made on the album. He does such a good job of “intriguing” the media with those weird descriptions of his music- just keep doing that.
Honestly, he keeps on talking about how being gay is no big deal- so stop making it a big deal! He doesn’t need to play into the nation’s obsession with sexuality. If he moved away from that, then maybe THAT could be considered “groundbreaking” and “different”.

      • November 16, 2009 9:34 pm

So enlighten me Top Idol, if Adam dumped 19E (without looking like an egomaniacal jerk in the process, a la Aiken), how could he reach top 40 success like Jason Derulo, Black Eye Peas, Lady GaGa, and Jason Sean and also get the wonderful approval rating from both gays and straights? How should he tell reporters who mention his sexuality to fuck off and focus back on the music while still being gay enough to push the cause? People will always think he is sellout just for being on AI (and that also means that HBD and La princess or whatever the fuck you call them are also sellouts). People already think he acts too gay and is a drama queen and call him Madam, but there not homophobes and haters when they call him these things! OH NO! They’re just jackasses.
So tell me Top Idol, how can he save himself from 19E and come off smelling like a rose to you and the gays and the straights and everyone else in this fucking world (BTW, you still didn’t answer my question about naming five gay male pop singers in the top 40 right now. If we live in such a modern time where gayness is not an issue AT ALL, surely you can answer.)

I never said being gay wasn’t an issue, but to me, it isn’t. And it’s not an issue to any of the people I associate with, either.

I just looked at the Top 40, btw, and its mostly female. Gaga, Swift, Clarkson…some rappers and that Justin kid I refuse to listen to.

I think Lambert could dump them in time and just claim artistic differences. He may, perhaps, be just fine or decidedly better off.

I also don’t think Hicklin is a self-hating gay man. I think he is an editor who knows how to generate press for his magazine. I mean look at your own blog. You say he will do anything for fame, and the pickets and torches have already come out for Adam’s head for being such a fame whore and caring more about his media persona than his singing. Wah! He’s getting press before the release of his album by being in these magazines. No singer, musician, or band has EVER done that before! Why can’t it be just about the music and not about all that gay stuff? Why can’t Adam just tongue a guy in a magazine and not a girl, that big faker? Why can’t Adam be the poster-boy for everything queer and then quickly die out because this country still thinks gay marriage is too radical for the masses (but being gay is just A-OKAY)? Why the inhumanity and why can’t Adam cure it all? Why Top Idol? Why?

I don’t think he should be a poster boy for anything, nor have I ever explicitly called him a fame whore.

And I hate people like Perez Hilton who think it’s their duty as a gay to out others. I hate that bastard. And it’s not the BE MORE GAY which is notable, it’s that they were called out on it.

Side note, I also think Kris Allen is doing an interview with the Logo Channel (or did recently…?)

I”m sorry but as a fan of Adam I have to say that some of you glamberts need to take it down a notch. Ms. Thing ain’t no innocent. He’s looking for publicity and fame. There is nothing wrong with that but let’s be for real, all celebs have to deal with the double edged sword that fame brings. At this point Adam hasn’t really dealt with negative press. Glamberts going over the top over someone’s opinion just need to relax and sit the fuck down. It ain’t that serious.

            • November 16, 2009 10:56 pm

Top Idol, I never said you called Adam a fame whore. I paraphrased your final statement from your latest entry (don’t deny it wasn’t a smack on Adam) and noted how your followers ran with it. As a gay man, it’s hard living up to expectations in this country. The gay community doesn’t really seem to like Adam (Go on the gay sites like Defamer “blacklisted,” and you’ll find some negative press). Based on that letter, it just feels like Adam has to fit an agenda of someone else’s viewpoint, and no one, gay, straight, or bi, should feel like that. You’ve read the letter. Hicklin implied that he has chosen Adam to be the poster-boy for gay rights and so far, Adam is a disappointment.

Oh yeah, I’m not a Glambert. I’m a gay man who feels like other gays shouldn’t have to jump through hoops to satisfy others. And whenever there is a new entry by Top Idol concerning Adam’s actions, NOT ABOUT HIS CRAZY ASS FANS, I feel like there is a passive-aggressive tone about him always missing those hoops. Maybe not from Top Idol herself, but definitely from her own self-righteous followers.

I recall Lambert stating he didn’t want to be anyone’s poster boy, and I appreciated this, especially because I loathe the likes of Perez Hilton.

ML, have you been reading the comments over at MJ’s? Some of them…wow…what is your take?

                • November 16, 2009 11:20 pm

Oh there are definitely some crazy-ass heifers over at Mj’s. That is not even a dispute. I feel sorry for the poor woman having to weed out all their shit every ten minutes.
But you also have to admit that the letter has given Adam some big Donna Summer shoes to fill.

“The gay community doesn’t really seem to like Adam (Go on the gay sites like Defamer “blacklisted,” and you’ll find some negative press).”

Oh honey, I’ve been out and part of the gay community since I was 15. One of the things I’ve learned is that the gay community isn’t monolitic, just like the ‘black community’ isn’t monolithic in it’s views. Some queers love Adam, some don’t. Big shit. I’m a minority within a minority community and I’m not going to get all pissy because a few white queers aren’t as racially conscious as they should be or because a few gay men are a bit misogynistic or a few lesbians don’t like men. I’m not going to generalize because SOME people don’t like something.

Defamer is all about snark. I don’t take them seriously as representing ‘the press’ or ‘the LGBT community’ and I doubt most people do.

BTW, I think Aaron is a publicity whore and a pissy bitch when he doesn’t get his way. I ain’t representing all queer women of color when I make that statement.

I really don’t think Adam needs to market himself as something he’s not. He doesn’t
need to invent some all inclusive sexuality to suck everyone into his fanbase. It seems
he’s done that without the help of 19E. People responded to him on the show and on tour when he was being himself . Why change that now?

His female fans don’t seem to care that he’s gay. I doubt that branding him as “bi” will affect the numbers that much. I don’t really believe that the vast majority of these fans
honestly think they have a shot in hell anyway.

As far as straight males go, I don’t know of any who assess a singer’s sexuality before singing along on the radio. His music will either appeal to the public or it won’t. By trying to get him to “sell out”, they risk alienating the fanbase who want him the way he is…warts and all.

disclaimer: “Warts and all” is just an expression ( in case any lurking Glamberts think I’m trying to falsely attribute some skin imperfections)

            blacklisted,
One: you can hate whatever the fuck what you want to hate.
Two: my point was that not all of the press want to go to bed with Adam.
Three: don’t call me honey, you just prove my point about how high-and-mighty some people are on this blog. It is about as sickening to read as most of the cow herds’ posts at Mj’s website.

ML, ALL celebrities have to deal with negative comments from certain members of the press. Adam is an entertainer, he will receive some critical comments in his career. So far, he’s been really loved by a lot of the press. He recieved great tour reviews, people acknowledge his beautiful voice and talent, etc. The fact he’s getting a little criticism is par for the course because he is a celebrity.

BTW, I call people ‘honey, bb, gurl, etc’. It’s actually a sign of affection, not condescension. If I were being patronizing or condescending, you would know it, believe me. 🙂

By trashing 19, Out magazine practically called Adam an “Uncle Tom,” or whatever the gay equivalent is. Adam has been famous for 10 months. He has had enormous pressures thrust upon him. I think he is far more open and honest then a lot of people would be in his situation. I’m sure he has had to make concessions along the way, I have had to make concessions in my career as well. I don’t think he is “pretending” to be curious to appease management. If he was so desperate to be famous and appease management why didn’t he say from the beginning he was Bi? He could have. He didn’t have to be honest.

I think he agreed to the Details photo shoot because he enjoys being a sex symbol and knew it would foster that. He stated it was a “Role” he was playing.
He is an actor, too ya know!

I’m a Gay Male and what gets me is the batshit crazy Adam fans. They get so unhinged, and worked up over someone they don’t even know. IT.IS.ONLY.A.TV.SHOW people. They knew they were going to be under scrutiny when they tried out for the show.

Also Adam’s fans are going to like him no matter whatever we say or post. They already know he is gay, it is 19E and some of Adam’s own actions that get the most harshest treatment by Gays, not by the rest of the country, because of all the bullshit 19e and Adam try to pull. Everyone already knows he is Gay and it is no secret, so it is dumb to act like you are not or for 19e to try to act like he isn’t.

So what if we have some levity out of Idol? Plus we didn’t put his ass on the show in front of millions, he did. Also remember that old saying bad press is better than no press at all. There are hundreds of people in the entertainment industry who would love to have the same press Adam is getting, good or bad so one blog is not going to take down his career.

      So chill.
