Adam Lambert’s Most Memorable AMA Moments

November 23, 2009

If you want to hear my thoughts (and others) about Adam Lambert’s performance of For Your Entertainment on tonight’s American Music Awards, check out the Top Idol AMA Live Blog thread.

But let’s check out some of the more memorable moments from tonight’s AMA finale, shall we?

And have we figured out just what is the gender of the androgynous keyboardist? He is, indeed, male. Tommy Joe Ratliff — who is also the bassist in Lambert’s recently announced band.

What did you think? The vocals started off extremely off key, and perhaps its just that no performer on any of these shows ever shocks me, but I felt that Lambert was trying to be as over the top as possible and not for “art”, but for shock value. We get it. You’re SEXY. You want to PUSH BOUNDARIES. Great. I like that sort of thing, however, please go back to singing. It’s what got you here in the first place.

And come on! Don’t flip off the camera. Like Patrick Swayze or Michael Jackson jokes — IT’S TOO SOON!!!

You know what would have been shocking? Rhianna sounding good. That might have shocked me. Oh, and apparently they removed the kiss for the central viewing region (and presumably the west coast, too). Now that pisses me off. My senses weren’t offended upon seeing two men kiss. They, were however, irrevocably damaged upon discovering Jermaine Jackson’s son is named JERMAJESTY.

    Hmm..The comments are not disgusting…
I’m interested in Lambert so I surfed the Internet for his news. And haters always love him more – arriving at his news so much earlier.. Hmm..
So sorry that the lousy article only got so little attention – All those glamberts don’t even care to come here~~

A few people’s opinions represent the world. Funny you gave him opinions on how to run a career. If he does accept the stupid suggestions, I would ignore him forever. haah

Oh, I didn’t realize you knew how close their friendship was Sherena. One can only hope that his family does keep him grounded. I merely was suggesting that Adam would be best served if he remained friendly with Kris. The guy seems to have his shit together for someone only in his 20s. Adam, nearly 30, seems more of a child.

I didn’t mean Kris as interviewer. lol When Adam and Kris are interviewed together, Adam seems more real. I’m sure it was understood, but just to verify. That was a total fail on my part. Sorry.

btw: good explanation of Adam flipping off the audience. You have to watch it. It’s Jim!

I’ve just watched the entire thing. Wasn’t so sold on most of the interview…the part about the ninja roll was okay, but the rest struck me as a bit…I just think he needs to chill on the arrogance. There is a difference between being confident and arrogant.

And way to fan the flames in this supposed war with Out Magazine.

I watched the interview as well and got the same impression. I was like, “who is this guy?” He just sounded so full of himself. He admitted to tripping when his foot caught on the step. I spotted that right away. I dvr’d the last half of the AMAs. When he interviews with Kris, he seems like he has a great sense of humor, not so pretentious and less uptight. I wonder if he thought interviewing with Jim C. was beneath him. I have to admit I’m surprised Jim got the interview. Adam’s use to bigger names clamoring for his attention. These are the interviews Adam should have done from the get-go, starting first and foremost with radio DJs. I guess they’re making him finally do the grunt work. Just being Adam playing celebrity doesn’t seem to have cut it.

(On a side note: This is probably so wrong, but I have had a growing respect for Eminem over the years. I think he’s good at what he does. His rapping for the most part is clever, witty and jock full of imagery. When he performed with Elton John a while back, it really moved me. Is that wrong of me?)

Jim does interview a lot of big name people. Last week he got to hang out with Shakira. Idol is very strict with how much access MTV gets for whatever reason. You would think they would want to be featured on a network targeting the youth market more, but…who knows. And there are only 5 media outlets which get to see the taping every week in LA.

I don’t understand why Idol/19E does most of what they do.

I think Jim C. is very cool and very talented. I think he’s going places in the entertainment industry. I have to say, it was just a vibe I got from Adam. Kris always seemed very accessible and I think Kris and Jim have built a great rapport. It’s fun to watch. I don’t recall seeing any Jim and Adam interviews until this recent one. Adam was more Access Hollywood, more in the Hollywood spotlight. Adam seemed more about walking the red carpet with Katy Perry or making music with Lady Gaga, and namedropping like a madman.

I do hope Adam keeps in touch with Kris. I think it might be his one saving grace. HBD will keep him grounded, instead of floating off to that make-believe planet fierce. (And I do so despise the whole glittery alien from planet fierce crapola!)

See, this is the foolishness here. So much keystroking and egostroking with no foundation. Cantiello was one of several interviews and he did radio djs starting early in the morning. And to spinningfaster: Girl, just because you know a passe expression doesn’t make you able to pull one off. Newsflash: There’s not a queer on the internet who’s used “fag hag” in any context at any time in the past year, and in particular in an Adam Lambert fan discussion. But then, that’s why you’re here. Oh, boy. I just watched the interview with Jim. So, Adam is saying that when he pushed that guy’s face in his crotch and then mashed his face into the other dude’s face– that was all unplanned? Neither guy knew that was going to happen, but he knew they’d be “cool with it”? Does he have any idea how date rapist, dirtbaggy, creepy that sounds? Ugh. Sorry folks, but he is a pig.

        November 25, 2009 5:07 pm

The dude was crawling on the floor with his mouth open at Adam’s crotch-level…yet it wasn’t choreographed? The girl just happened to postion herself above him with her leg at an easy access angle, yet it wasn’t choreographed? The kiss…I might believe, but not the rest of it.( I just hope the “kissee” had some idea that it might happen, and was fine with it)

Again, it’s not so much the performance itself (even the bad singing-everybody has an “off” day) I had a problem with, (although the “bj” crossed the line for network TV, IMO)…it’s the attitude he’s taken about it. I haven’t really joined in on too much of the criticism b/c honestly, he seems (or seemed) like a genuine guy, and I didn’t want to be overly harsh. If he’s doing all this tongue-in-cheek and playing the media for suckers…then I’m OK with it. If this “arrogance” is real, then I don’t have much use for it. At this point, I honestly can’t tell what is going on with him.

American Idol alums are split when it comes to Adam Lambert’s racy performance at the American Music Awards on Sunday.

But season 3’s Jon Peter Lewis says Lambert shouldn’t be calling his performance art. “All this nonsense about Adam Lambert’s whole project being art is bogus,” he told Us. “That idea is absurd. It’s like calling Thomas Kinkade art. What a sham.”</quote.

Perez Hilton, douchebag, seems to be putting down Kris Allen in his defense of Adam Lambert. I guess Kris represents all those Christian homophobes who are calling in to ABC. Says Adam’s debut is going to outsell Kris’s. Maybe it will, Kris’s #s are going to go down as the lowest debut album of an American Idol winner ever. The HDD total comes in at about 85,000 units sold.

I get pissed off at the fact that this kid has been used and abused by both the extreme left and right. He’s just a guy who wants to make music, music I like.

KIIS – Seacrest’s station added Adam’s new song WWFM. The machinations of making Adam Lambert a STAR sucks. It amazes me how much this is pissing me off. Exploitation is ugly.

And since when do we need to put Kris down to make Adam succeed? They don’t want a competition, so why make it one? They would be ecstatic if they both have huge record sales, dominate the charts, and put out plenty of records. They don’t want the other to fail. And that is the beauty of Kradam.

In short: Perez is a douche.

      From Broadway World:

Sucks that this was canceled, but I’m happy for his fans that will still be able to see him on another show tomorrow. Controversial or not, the guy has talent and is in demand. Not all bad news, it’s wonderful for the Clay Aiken fans who post on a board called “Chexxxy’s Place”. They’re banding together to try and take Adam down. They’ve been sending emails to GMA the last few days telling them how wrong they are for allowing Adam to perform. They are now sending emails to the Today show, hoping it will get him canceled there too. Fear not though, all of Clay Aiken’s fans are not as crazy, OTT, or loony as this bunch!!!

The problem I had with the kiss was it took the guy by surprise and it came across to me as a violation. Adam is a big guy, forceful, and maybe just for a nano second the smaller guy might have felt threatened. Fight or flight. Plus by that point, I think Adam was pissed and it came out in the kiss, aggressive, angry. The kiss didn’t look planned. Adam is his employer. In a normal workplace this would never fly, especially if it was a woman. The guy is straight and Adam said something asinine like rock ‘n roll is like a prostitute … again, Adam where is the rock ‘n roll? I guess he means the guy is open to anything in the name of rock ‘n roll.

That was my issue too. If it had been planned nobody should care but…what if the guy really didn’t ant the kiss to happen but just went along with as to not ruin the performance? That would make me lose a lot of respect for Adam. But I’m not going to make any assumptions until I hear a statement from Tommy. Maybe Adam knew that for some reason he’d be cool with it?

His tweets are boring, mundane and always full of ass kissing and name dropper…AND EXCUSES.

There is no “there” there. He is just a plain Fame Whore and appears to be very plastic.

All the AI contestants seemed to love Adam, Sarver was converted and has twittered saying he changed his opinion because of Adam – Kris actually said that he “loved” Adam. Just today Kris tweeted congratulations to Adam on his album and for folks to go and buy it. People stop making assumptions where there is no proof. I could easily say that those who dont praise Adam are gay, jealous or haters but do you know what? I have no proof of that so I won’t say it. Keep spinning.

I highly doubt adam will learn anything from this lesson if his reaction is to (quickly) play the “gay discrimination” card and deem the BJ/FingerBanging action an artistic expression. Riiiiight. News flash to adam: nobody gives a hoot about the kiss…its the other stuff that was innappropriate for this particular performance and as a result is getting blurred during rebroadcast. MTV does not equal ABC. Madonna/Britney’s kiss does not equal you thrusting your crotch in a guy’s open mouth. He’s a smart guy, he knows this and yet he is choosing to play dumb. Thats what bothers me…he’s full of shyt. If he doesnt realize his errors, then he’ll continue to think the world is full of prudes and he’s the only original, cool one. That is a recipe for disaster. Hey, maybe for a Holiday TV Special, he can fk an elf on top of the Rockefeller Tree and then light the place on fire. Edgy.

I read that ABC knew about everything except the kiss. It had come up in rehearsals before and they were fully aware. Which is why they probably advertised the performance as “outrageous”. And which is why Adam talked about the kiss. Double standards much?

At least he admits it was pitchy. One of my friends watched it and told me his voice was terrible. That made me sad…

Also I’m hearing that Susan Boyle will top Rihanna and Adam on the charts easily (Gaga too, I think) and all I can say is LOL omg I so, so called it from the very beginning. I feel so vindicated. But I hope Adam does well–crossing my fingers for Top 3. I want him to succeed so badly.

Adam has no problem exploiting his gayness. It has helped his career more than hurt it up to this point. He would never have gotten the cover of Rolling Stone, Details, EW, and so on, if he was merely a straight male with a good voice. During American Idol, he was viewed by many as a victim, a martyr, a thorn in Middle America’s homophobic side, a gay rights champion, a role model for misfit children, a rule breaker, a boundary pusher, the reincarnation of Mercury and Elvis, a gay rock god. And so began the hype and he began to believe it and he began to use it.

The media, such as, Rolling Stone, have dug themselves into a hole. They can’t do a 180 now, they’ll lose credibility, but of course, the joke is they all ready have to many of their readership. ROCK GOD? Really, Rolling Stone? Really? From day one, I felt they’d eventually realize they were backing the wrong horse. Adam Lambert belongs in the rock/pop world as much as Sam Harris did, which in my opinion is, not at all. Adam is playing a role, but the act is wearing thin. It lacks authenticity and unfortunately he’s unraveling on the world’s stage.

He doesn’t make it easy to care one way or the other with his snide remarks. It’s not that deep is getting old. Someone said to own it. I agree; take responsiblity for it whether you fall on your face or fly. Don’t make excuses. No one has been given the opportunities at this stage that Adam Lambert has been given and I bet there’s quite a few in the industry that resent the hell out of that.

Rather than trying to impress his peers, namely GAGA, he should try impressing his fans, the people who got him this far. Bottom line, Lady Gaga is in it for herself — it’s the name of the game. Art or no art it ultimately comes down to who is #1 on the Billboard charts.

I agree this has become a train wreck. It’s hard to look away.

Here is the part of the interview about the kiss lauren:

“To that end, Lambert insisted he didn’t put all that much thought into the possible repercussions of such a risqué performance. “I think I did that early on Idol, where I was careful and thought about things a lot,” he explained. “But when it comes to being a live performer, thinking is the biggest enemy. It’s about trying to be in the moment as much as possible.” As for how bass player and keyboardist Tommy Joe Ratliff, who’s been playing with Lambert all of three weeks, got roped into a nationally televised lip-lock? Easy, he didn’t know it was coming. “He just believes in the spirit of rock & roll, as do I,” said Lambert. “He’s a really cool open guy. There’s a quote from the movie Velvet Goldmine that we both get a kick out of: ‘Rock & roll is a prostitute — it should be tarted up.’ He believes in that the same way I do.”

It was bound to happen. Although I don’t know how many new ones he garnered last night either to be honest.

The more I think about him comparing himself to Britney, Christina, Madonna, the more I don’t see it. They all played the game before they broke the boundaries, and that being his first run out at being something was a bit of something to swallow for most.

Madonna started with the clean “Holiday”, Britney with “Baby one more time” Christina with “Genie in the Bottle”

They brought on the SEXY later on. And I want to stress that. They were sexual, and not simulating sex. I suppose it is a fine line. Except maybe Madonna, Madonna had her moments.

Unless Adam considers his stint on American Idol playing the game and now he felt it was time to let the world see he was done playing by the rules.

It’s more or less the fact that he purposely did it to get a rise that pisses me off. It wasn’t meant to be meaningful. It was meant to piss people off and get them talking. But maybe it was too much too soon. Some people are only fans of American Idol. Some people don’t even know who the hell you are, and you leave them with that memory.

      Job done Adam.

          November 23, 2009 4:20 pm

Rihanna’s Rated R can be had for 3.99, too. It’s worth noting that both Adam and Rihanna have singles that haven’t set the charts on fire, so I think their record labels are doing whatever is necessary to move units.

Meanwhile, Lady Gaga’s Fame Monster and Susan Boyle’s I Dreamed a Dream appear to be at regular price. That indicates that they’re going to sell, regardless of price.

So even if Adam sells at a good clip, it’s undercut by the decreased price.

I think you can even download FYE for 99 cents with some coupon Amazon has. One day into his album release and Adam is already in the discount bin. *SMH*

People who are blind fans might say that about you of course.
Anyone w/any taste would agree w/you that it was just a really bad musical performance, no matter what his sexual orientation is.
The sexual innuendos only detracted from the show in this case, when they should have been used to enhance.
Anyone who presented a show like that would not get my vote.

Here is Lambert’s viewpoint on his performance:
2009 American Music Awards: Adam Lambert Backstage – ‘Shock Is Fun’

    http://www.accesshollywood.com/_video_1178554

    Yeah, shock is fun.
    Adam’s performance really wasn’t actually.
The diff between most of the “shocking artists moments” he quotes here are they weren’t on prime time tv during the hours of 7-10 pm. Most of them were on cable/MTV.
    Also, the singing was awful.
Blaming it on the sound system is just lame.
Kelly sounded awesome as did many others.
Even Whitney hit more true notes than Lambert did, & she has obviously lost most of her range & power..
Yes Wino, the whole thing came off as just really desperate & crass.

Okay, so Adam Lambert just saved me some bucks. I think he is probably the quickest performer yet to become so obnoxious and… and… just what is a male Diva… oh on second thought Diva DOES fit Adam.
This man has this incredible voice and I love to hear it but… well you know the bucks he is gong to save me?? I am not going to buy his music. This guy is nothing like the performer on American Idol, did coming out of the closet do that?

    • November 24, 2009 6:07 pm

TARD WARNING! Ke, truly I am sorry for you, but I doubt you ever really got Adam. From when I saw him perform Ring of Fire on AI – and I promise I hadn’t watched it for years (flippantly channel hopping from here in the UK) I felt immediately the potential of Adam. Straight up I got up and googled his past performances. I am telling you there IS a market for his stuff. His AMA performance was only shocking to me because of the dire sound. The rest I could of only dreamt of. I want a performer to be unashamedly acting the part of an entertainer. Is that shallow or tasteless? I don’t expect him to thank me as a fan, or care about his audience – other than to provide them with an experience that they will either enjoy or be challenged by. Admittedly as a diehard fan I will only be upset with him if he kills my children or husband, other than that – go ahead Adam -make my day! It is just entertainment. Seriously, don’t let AMAs put you off the album. Despite what I said about letting him do anything bar killing my kids, I was really delighted with FYE, I promise if you skip this you are missing out on some awesome music.

I live in Los Angeles and they aired the kiss, along w. all the bump and grinding. The finger flip was the obvious omission. As stated by many of you, the issue was his voice. He was off key and the screeching at the end was a bit self indulgent. The kiss was so random (and yes, angry) that it came across as an un-natural part of the performance. You must earn your stripes in this industry and I feel he missed the point. Lady Gaga can back up a wildly choreographer performance which solid, at times, stellar vocals. Plus in the context of her song or dancing, her crazy makes sense. Sadly, Adam tried so hard to be a water cooler topic, he threw in every bad boy cliché except the kitchen sink. One word to describe what I saw: desperate.

Oh, now apparently this wasn’t choreographed, it all happened in the moment. (from CNN)

“Asked whether the sexual moves were rehearsed, Lambert said it was “in the moment.”

“Part of what I love about being a live performer is that sometimes you just are in the moment and sometimes things just happen,” he said. “Adrenaline is a crazy, crazy, crazy feeling. Some of the things I love most about performing is when you’re up there and all of the sudden you just have these feelings, this rush that comes over you.”

I don’t believe that for one second.

I haven’t watched the performance for fear of second-hand embarrassment from which I may never recover, but I’ve looked at several still photos and from what I can tell, Adam’s performance was HAM-my (both as HAM = Hot Ass Mess and as a fattening pork product).

I’m not surprised by much these days. Two guys kissing? Someone flippng off a camera? That’s no big deal. But simulating oral sex on broadcast TV? That’s too much. Not that I’m shocked by it, but it wasn’t needed. I’d be OK with it if Adam had been performing for MTV–that sort of thing is expected and appreciated in that context. But you’ve got to understand your audience. Take Lady Gaga. The bleeding dead puppet act she did for the VMAs was cool. But she knows that doing that for the AMAs–which is going to be watched by a more mainstream audience–wouldn’t work. So go for the break the glass for the piano trick. It makes an impact without offending anyone and making yourself look like an idiot.

Adam is in deseperate need of a no-BS person on his team. Someone who will tell him that 95% of the stunts he’s pulling aren’t original, shocking, or interesting. Where’s the intelligence behind all this? What’s the motivation? If it’s just to be a famewhore, then fine. But if Adam is trying to build a real career where he won’t become the butt of jokes–and trust me, this will happen sooner than anyone realizes–then he needs to ‘pump the brakes’ and SLOW DOWN with all this nonsense. You can only be shocking for so long before everyone realizes that king is wearing no clothes. Put some substance with the music and FAST.

Honestly i think society needs to stop being so close minded. I mean many people have saw far worse…i can even go to the extent of saying that there are women singers that have done more vulgar scenes. Plus if you listen to his lyrics they are telling you what to expect…so you all cant say he didnt warn you….quit acting so surprised!
I believe his vocals were a little pitching….he does need to focus on his voice because it is just as much about the singing as it is the performance but i didnt have anything against his performance except him falling…didnt know if that was on purpose or part of the act…it kinda confused me!
but Adam is a great singer..he just needs to get use to fame and find his focus!

Lame, unoriginal, contrived, desperate, disappointing ….Disliking a performance that could be described with one or all of those words is not an example of being close minded. It is simply a matter of taste. In my opinion, he was trying too hard. The “look at me, look how shocking I am can be” act should be reserved for an aging, fading celeb, not a fresh, new guy on the scene. He doesn’t need to go “there”.

Some would say that Adam’s voice is an empty vessel–while pretty, it doesn’t have any emotional depth. Leona Lewis is a prime example of this idea. While Adam is nowhere near as boring as Leona, I can understand why some would find his singing uninspired.

          • November 24, 2009 5:03 pm

Really about Leona? Her live performances have often pushed the “cry” button in me. I remember her sing “the first time ever I saw your face” on a UK programme dedicated to Divas. Wish could remember the full title of the programme. She is technically amazing but I too never really warmed to her, she just seems dull. But my emotional response to that performance was a revelation to me, I was sobbing by the end. Her singing pushes emotional buttons in me. Adam does that to me too – but with the added benefit that I love his personality. Who can really explain or judge whether right or wrong?

He is not coming off well. How much of this is an act? All his AI castmates loved the guy, so honestly…can he REALLY be that arrogant, or is he playing a part?

I am not sure if Britney or Madonna were ever censored but if I remember the interview correctly Adam was responding to the fact that all the porno stuff might be edited out on some channels. Which does smack of double standards. I still think he is a awesome, it takes some courage to do what he did. 49. November 23, 2009 11:23 am

As a cofounder of an arts organization (poets and writers) we had a “no censorship” policy EXCCEPT when presenting in public schools. This worked for us and allowed everybody plenty of other arenas to perform in any way they desired. The simulted blow job was out of place for the network (okay for MTV, etc.) Taken in context and theme of the song, it was entirely appropriate, just not for this show.

I would have preferred one of his other songs that showcased his beautiful voice. I love him anyway no matter what. It is my hope that this doesn’t cause a loss of album sales. There are some really great songs people need to hear.

He’s such a fake. If you’re gonna be a fuckin weirdo then at least put some thought behind it. Lady Gaga is the weirdest bitch out there, but at least there is some art behind the stuff she does. I thought it was kinda epic when she broe the glass to get to the piano.

There was no art behind Adam’s performance. He was just shoving his crotch in peoples’ faces for shock value and nothing more. I think he saw his performance starting to fall apart so he kissed that guy so people would focus more on that than his shitty performance.

MTV, Rolling Stone and some other people are giving him good reviews. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND. They have to be getting paid to say they liked that shit because it was horrible. But I still think Lambert is more about fame than music/art. You can argue with me all you want. He wants to be talked about. And it’s ironic how he keeps saying he doesn’t want to be some gay poster boy, but then he publicly says censoring his performance would be discrimination. So what is it gonna be?

Look at the review RS gave his album Top Idol. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t fan-fucking-tastic either.
This is a stupid game he has to play. Stop the preaching. He won second place on a reality show that just finished it’s eighth season! The only second place finisher that has had decent success is Clay fucking Aiken. Adam knows what’s at stake given the history of Idol. I don’t blame him. If you’re not talked about, your album doesn’t sell (HBD: nice guy, good album, horrible sells). I don’t think he should be burned at the stake along with his career for one bad performance. Sorry, I’m not jumping on the hate bandwagon, just because everyone realized the perfect Adam Lambert can trip and fall on his ass sometimes.

I didn’t post yesterday because I had a dream that he fell off the stage. I thought it was a premonition that he would disappoint me. I was disappointed initially, but now I’m amused.

His voice sucked. I cannot sugar coat that. It started off good then he lost it—his nerves got the best of him. The beginning did have promise. I liked the Asian music and narrative, then, it fell flat. (My personal concept for the song from day one was a Geisha theme. He is a Geisha.) After the opening, a chorus of back up signers should have chimed in and belted out the lyrics in a powerful and aggressive way, allowing him to saunter about provocatively, pausing periodically for him to belt out a few lyrics that do showcase his voice. (I should really be consulted next time. :))

As for the flipping off —I missed it. I watched several times and keep missing it. I will watch again.

I hesitate to get too preachy because after my rant over the cd cover, I have actually come to like it. I will go to my grave hating the fonts, but having seen the deluxe packaging (it came today) and I have to say I was wrong in my assessment of the art director’s skill set. It is quite beautiful. The photos are gorgeous and the lyrics are included. (Huge pet peeve when they’re not.)

Adam is shocking. He makes me smile. He makes me nervous. He makes me…

I’ll be back later for my come-up-ins.

You know, he sounded more or less the way I though he would after listening to the sound check on ABC, hearing Greenday (drowned out), and Carrie –yes, Carrie (I’m not saying she didn’t kick ass), so I wasn’t fazed. Also, everybody gives an off performace vocally now and again. It’s true. Well, it does. This was incredibily high profile, so sucks for him –but, again, it happens. BEP sucked. Rhianna, too. That surprised me. And, he handeled the fall really well, better than JLO. But you know what? He did exactly what I thought he would and I throughly enjoyed it. We all know he can SANG (whether “you” like the sound of his voice or not is a different matter). We know, he knows how to put on a top notch performance –but pissed off Barabra Walters? Strangely, I find that beautiful. Or maybe I’m just a hopeless tard. Yeah, that’s probly it. 🙂

Second watch helped to take it all in, just wished it had sounded better – the clip from rehearsals sounded awesome! I LOVE that song, it normally makes me want to dance – this just made me tense LOL. For consolation tho the album is nbr 7 on itunes now and deluxe version at nbr 11 – not bad really. He is on Letterman this week, can’t see him pulling any of these shenanigans there! 🙂

Thing is, established fans such as you and 8sourcandy will be more willing to give him a second chance because you’ve seen him do better many times before. Which is why you end up rewatching the performance on youtube and reassessing it. I read on MJ’s that a lot of the fans did that. Casual viewers who’ve never heard or seen him perform live before would be more likely to sit through that AMA performance once and make up their minds instantly. I doubt they’ll be clamouring to rewatch it or to find his other performances.

        • November 24, 2009 4:54 pm

That is a good point. Fans who are used to Adam pulling off great performances will be disappointed. But what about people who never heard a thing from Adam Lambert before – if they are broad-minded regarding the sexual content, they could well be impressed. Not all the vocal was shoddy – there was enough to let people who hadnt heard him know that he has great talent there. Some anecodotal evidence suggests that this is true. Some people actually bought his album from the strength of that performance only and had never seen him before. Apples/oranges, horses for courses etc.

But Madonna had already had a couple of hit records and videos by that point. Madam was on the verge of his first release, a record with very curious timing. They almost never release new music on a Monday because of the way the Billboard charts run. Curiouser and curiouser. I think very soon that career of his is going to be DOA.

True, Like a Virgin was her first smash hit, but it wasn’t her first radio single, and by the time she did that performance, Like a Virgin was already huge. Plus, yeah, cable and an already racey reputation.

Before that album cover, I’m not sure anyone thought this was who Adam wanted to be. He really has no self awareness at all. It looks like they released several artists early this week, so I don’t think that’s just Adam. The $3.99 on the full album thing? That’s total BS. Doesn’t look good at all.

Madonna’s first single on MTV was “Lucky Star”. She’s smart: it wasn’t racy by 1984 standards. I remember it like yesterday. She was wearing black leggings and a black sleeveless top, and a black doo-rag in her hair, with simple black shoes. She danced against a white cyc wall, lip synching “Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight”. There was nothing racy about it, just a wink and a nod for the camera, and her snapping gum, sucking a red lollipop, and flashing her belly button. The belly button was what did it: no artist had ever fetishized her own navel before, and I remember clearly the media was HOOKED. Britney also showed restraint on her first hit single. She was wearing a suggestive but not all-our whorish schoolgirl uniform with a short skirt, and looked cute in the basketball court scene, fully dressed in a sleeveless tank and sweatpants. This is the difference. Talented people show restraint when they first appear (remember Mariah’s fully-dressed, cute, blue jeans debut?). Scared people go the full gamut. Adam’s mistake was blowing his l–d too soon. Oh how he could have titillated! How he could have winked and been cute! There were so many ways, I wish I managed him!

Adam blew it out of sheer insecurity, and once you show the full prize, instead of the tease, your career is over. I love my gays, but what you boys don’t understand about how we women hook men is this: the thing is the Tease. Many gay fellas lack mystery and restraint; women are born knowing how to preserve both. Straight men love mystery and to use their imagination to get their rocks off. Provide the hint, the mystery, the tease, and you will have audiences eating out of your hand. Adam Lambert forgot this, and I think he’s done.

For REAL gay men working it onstage, look to JPop. Gackt is gay and would blow Adam out of a stadium. He knows how to do it right. So does the gay lead singer of Malice Mizer.

      Sorry.
Lambert is no where near the entertainer Madonna was @ this time, and her performance was on MTV/Cable, not prime time TV.

People knew she was controversial already, Lambert hadn’t even released his album yet, or done anything close to this in any of his performances Idol or post-Idol yet. He is a newcomer. Not many people outside of the Lambert fandom know of his pre-Idol performances.

Plus, his vocals were just horrendous. Blaming it on the sound system just does not fly.

So you think it’s ok for Adam to shove someone’s face in his crotch & flip the bird to the viewers during a debut performance on prime time tv? Please tell us what other performer has done this during prime time. This should be interesting.

I can’t believe how far people will go to justify this performance.

When I saw the FONTS I knew I was in trouble.

I saw this with friends last night. My hands slipped up over my eyes shortly after the intro and remained there until that last note. I missed the kiss. I missed the vagina grab. I did watch it again, this morning at 6am. It wasn’t as bad as I first thought. I liked the intro a lot and the last string of notes. The middle was ill conceived. Overall it wasn’t good. The sound was awful. The choreography was weak. He should have used a headset mic. The kiss, which I expected, should have been sexier, less angry and more purposeful. The lack of color also contributed to a visually dull experience. Adam is talented. This sucked. He will do better next time. Right now he seems to be in spectacle mode.

An open letter to Adam Lambert,
Get your own creative team sweetheart. Hire Lee Cherry to stage your productions. You need an act. You need direction This is beyond your realm of expertise. Your management can’t help you with Avant Garde.

On a happy note. GaGa was brilliant. Whitney redeemed herself. Kelly Clarkson, pitch perfect and still under the radar. And JLO sang a song about my boots.

So somehow I can’t respond to LeighKat’s questions (never underestimate the power of a computer for making you crazy). I know he’s said he doesn’t want to be the Gay Rights Posterchild. But when you go on American Idol and are the first and only omg!openly gay contestant, you right there set yourself up to be a poster child. I think being sensitive to what that means would serve him so much better than shoving sex in America’s face. That’s just never sexy. When you add the fact that his singing sucked, well it horrifies me that now those who didn’t watch AI but do watch the AMA’s (sorry I was watching the MLS Cup) think that he’s a poser who can’t sing and made it to where he did because he’s omg!gay.

Repeat after me, gay isn’t about leashes, it’s not about blow jobs, it’s not about anal. Gay is never about the shock value (unless you’re a tranny and funny enough, not all trannies are gay and certainly not all looking for attention outside their little circle). I feel that he reduced it to this, and I kinda hate him for it. While he doesn’t want to be a poster child, in the end, he makes a perfect poster child for those who are hating gay people. Pisses me off? Yup!

I know people are saying Brit and Christina did it, but I don’t know, I don’t they ever pushed the line as far as he did. They were OTT sexual, but they weren’t simulating getting head or having sex on stage at any time…

There’s a thing tho, Adam, you weren’t at Madonna, Britney, or Christina status yet, so maybe stop giving a big fuck you to those who don’t get it, becuase you’re album WILL FLOP. When you outsell Gaga and Rhianna then we can talk. When you move as many units as Britney and Christina did/do then you can be overtly sexual.

This kiss didn’t phase me, yet I’m not surprised at the least for them removing it, most of the performance didn’t phase me. What did phase me for whatever reason was the implication of a blow job.

Maybe I’m getting old, but somehow I just don’t think that was the place for it, now if I was watching HBO I wouldn’t mind so much, but I was watching ABC and an Awards show, not Sex and the City.

My Dear Adam, Allow me to be truthful with you since obviously everyone handling your career has not been. You are one of this generations most gifted SINGERS. Why did you decide to SHOCK rather than to ASTONISH. You did a disservice to fellow homosexuals. You put forward that they are all about blowing, s&m, rauchiness, etc, etc, etc.
Why not prove to the world that Gay people are talented, intelligent, gorgeous, and popular enough to bring down the house at the AMA’S. You made us all believe you were unique but instead you wanted to copy the career of MADONNA. WHY!!!!!!! She can’t hold a candle to your VOICE. She was and still is one of our top performers but not our top SINGERS. You had such diversity on American Idol, why couldn’t you sing a song that show cased that GIFT that GOD bestowed upon you. You must now realize that you are in the spotlight and you NEED to be a beacon for all those young boys and girls coming up who need to see positive role models in the gay community. It comes with the territory when you become famous. You can still be YOU but does that mean VULGAR? I along with countless others are so very disappointed in your actions this evening. I pray that your career is still intact and that you learn a LESSON, a BIG LESSON. SING SING SING that is your calling not being a porn star. I love you Adam I love your voice…. Can I please hear it again? Melody

I’m the same. The blowjob and what looked like fingering the female dancer (though it may not have been) were way too much for me.

Yep, that’s what Rolling Stone’s regurgitated press release, I mean totally objective write-up, said.

“…and a giant mirrored prop so the audience could see the looks on their own shocked faces.”

At first I thought the couple reflected in the mirror was Kris and Katy. Oh, and Tommy is a straight man. Did he know what was about to happen?

I’m a serious supporter of gay rights. I hope this dude burns in hell for how he one handedly set back the movement with that stupid and poorly sung performance.

I never would have thunk it but Yes! There is a God!

I am confused? are you joking?- I did not like the performance but, to suggest that little Lambie has “set back” the gay right’s movement is ridiculous.
Poor vocals and a lame performance never killed anyone. I hope you were being sarcastic.

He makes gay rights seem about sex. That’s the furthest from the issue. It’s never sex it[s about the right to love who you choose.

          November 23, 2009 1:43 am

The man did not go on that stage saying – “THIS IS FOR GAY RIGHTS!”
he was sexual to make a spectacle- that’s all. It was an epic fail but, I really don’t think it was that deep.

            November 23, 2009 1:54 am

Maybe for him it wasn’t deep. Obviously it wasn’t deep enough that he cared to sing well. So my opinion is that he’s a fucking asshole for all the spectacle that didn’t live up to his singing…for the spectacle that who the fuck knows what it meant. I do get tired of the Adam “not that deep” battle cry. Ultimately it seems to me that he can do anything and it’s just “not that deep.” When he fails to sell because for me hes a big poser, will it be “not that deep?
Or will you hate people who don’t ascribe to gay people? Will you ignore those of us gay rights advocates who think he’s a douche? I’m just wondering now.

when you say “you” I assume you are talking about Lambie and not me cause, in case you haven’t noticed, I am far from being his biggest fan.

i agree he is a poser- all in the name of famewhoring. I guess i don’t think it’s fair that these expectations are being placed on him by some the gay community.

I suppose I can agree that his performance doesn’t do much to bolster support but, is that something that he owes the gay community? or anyone else for that matter? I am not convinced.

Never underestimate fear and hatred. Don’t underestimate homophobia. It’s clear from the past year’s politics hateful people have a specific stereotype in their minds when it comes to gay people, and this narcissist adolescent pinned the tail on the donkey of every single one of them in four very sad, very public American minutes. Don’t you think for one instant the Adam Lambert performance video will be played to death by anti-gay marriage hordes before every vote from here to eternity. They wanted ammunition against the cause, and Lambert handed it to them with a ribbon on top.

I swear Jermaine also said his other sons names were Jeremy and Jerfar…Adam’s bro Neil tweeted earlier on the subject “I will also be naming my dog Jermajesty”. I think I’m a bigger Neil Lambert fan than I am Adam…his sarcasm kills me.

On another note, just because a performance incorporates sex doesn’t mean it’s sexy (It was termed “sexy” either by some some reviewer or a reviewer quoting Adam).

    Seriously?! They removed the kiss?

What with the leashes, fellatio, bondage gear, molesting of stripper-wardrobed dancers of both genders, they go and remove a relatively harmless kiss?

Jeeze, I hate this country sometimes.

I wasn’t shocked @ all, just cringing @ the horrible vocals, the disjointed movements, the crappy dance choreography, & the lighting. That could have been a really cool dance number. It was all pretty sad. You’d think w/all that stage training he’d know better. Flipping the audience off is not a good idea on prime time tv I wouldn’t think.

People get this wrong all the time. Eastern/Central is a single real time broadcast, it’s just that the hours are apart. So if it’s 8pm Eastern, it’s 7pm Central. All live shows go out live to those zones, including Idol. Mountain and Pacific are each different time zones, and on a delay. Hawaii is also a different zone, which is why back in the day when Dialidol was accurate, one would have to wait to see when the results came in and the tide could shift quite drastically in Idol vote totals.

I have been a fan of Adam’s since day one on AI. Since then I was one of the first to preorder his debut CD. I cancelled it the other day. Last night’s performance AMA was awful. He acts like he’s already arrived and if he wants to keep the fan base he had on AI, he needs to go back to just singing beautifully instead of living his sexual fantasies onstage.

Actually, the riding of the dancers prompted me to think of an old Star Trek episode where a midget rides Kirk. Lambert really needs to take some choreography/performance lessons from Kirk & Spock.
Now THIS is what I call entertainment:
